Is there a reason unranked players are thrown into the fire with silver, gold, and plat players?

Yes, there is. Unranked players start at a 1200 MMR, while my MMR as high-silver 3 (mid-silver) is 1333 according to op.gg. They fit into the Silver division through MMR.
Speaking hypothetically here because nobody really knows exactly how the MMR is calculated but can give you an idea.
You start at 1200 MMR. A good MMR to learn at is about 800 MMR.
So you will need to lose a minumum of 8 games in a row to get to a place you can start doing good.
The system honestly IMO is good because it helps control smurfs. You have to go through a rough start but atleast you won't be playing against smurfs in every single game, that's what would happen if everyone started at 800 MMR.
