gripes of a bronze top

first off: i'm a bronze top. Very bronze. get over this or make the typical japes.

i am aware of what division i'm in, and play tanky champs with high floors that are damn near guaranteed net pluses for the team. Chogath is always solid, and requires literally no mind to use. Yorick is a situational counter-pick (to juggernauts.) He can stomp certain match-ups and force plays. Maokai is another super easy pick who's almost always useful Darius is more aggro if you like that, and outplays a lot of stuff. he's hard to mess up with too. Trundle is another Darius with different match-ups who hits a niche meta section really well

These 5 champs deal with 98.36% of all my matches, and they do it well. they all do well in lane, and even if they don't, they can all at least somewhat contribute in the mid/late game. These guys aren't even the only low-skill high-reward champs out there. they're just the ones i use. there are tons more who either hard-counter things or are just easy guaranteed assets for the team.

If you're playing ranked and getting sweaty for climbing in a very low divisions (which face it, means you're bad), why the heck would you overlook safe options for a Yasuo or aRiven. 90% of the low floor champs i see just end up feeding their opponent, who usually does the smart thing and picks a brainless tank (lol, see what i did there?) I get that these champs are fun to style on people with during laning, but bronzies like us aren't going to effectively translate that into objectives or map pressure. theres like no reason to play these guys at this elo. the latest fad with this is Ezreal jungle. that shit isn't for low elo. Ezreal has like 8 million skillshots and requires a team which knows metagame stuff. which we don't. Whenever i see it, the guy just ends up feeding hard.

I guess my question to all the low elo Riven Yasuo etc, out there, why? whenever i get you guys in lane, you feed, and whenever i see you on my team, you feed extra hard. do you want to style on people and say "gg ez?" mostly you just lose to people who are willing to be humble and play the tank. Is it just shits and gigs? do you honestly think these champs are the best options? I'm honestly curious, barbecue i can think of almost no situations where this has ever actually been true.

ps. I dont care how wonderful you say you are or how you say you carry your team. Your character is feast or famine (more famine in bronze) not a consistent breadwinner, and most bronze Riven feed horribly.

As a Gold top laner, the situation here is hardly better. Even in Gold and low Plat, champs like Riven and Jayce aren't used to their full potential. They are at least viable, if not really strong.

Now, Gold is a bit special, as most people only care about their season rewards. So once they actually get here, they play whatever without the care in the world. Probably why Rito only cares about Plat+.

Just keep at it, and gain game knowledge, learn to trade better, practice last hitting, pay attention to jungle... You can climb to Silver by just not being really bad.

GayFluffyUnicorn1 votes

That's the problem with those champs. Played badly which they get by gold/plat/silver etc they are more a burden to the team, if played very well they are unbeatable.

Salson1 votes

I like them personally. Ever since I hit mid Gold, I decided to focus more on getting better with GP/Fiora/Jayce and stuff than actually climb.

And weren't you a diamond GP main?

I have a question. You said to climb to silver you just need to not be bad. But I am currently in low-mid bronze, and I'm trying to climb (and get better) by maining mid lane. The thing is, some teammates in my game just lose motivation, like not feeding, they just don't care about the game anymore.. They basically give up on their matchups. What should I do in that situation? I don't want to lose the game (and lp), but at the same time I feel like I cannot win. Sometimes I even try to motivate them, but then they try to surrender. How should I deal with those games? Should I just accept them and surrender? I get far too many games like that in my elo, and I feel like we could win if we had the motivation. I want to climb but they are really getting in my way.

Your best bet is playing your own game. You can't control others, hell some them can't even control themselves.

With that in mind, your goal should be winning lane 60-70% of the time, then translating it into around 55% winrate. The only way to break 55% is broken champ abuse or a tier of skill difference.

Now, onto you/midlane. Rule 1 is hit more spells and dodge more spells. Rule 2 is to master last hitting with autos as a make. And no 4/6 crepps is not enough. Rule 3 is to not die to ganks, ward well and pay attention.

This is the 'don't be bad' part. Your opponent should are bad, therefore dodging their skillshots and ganks should be simple.

The last part is that you main Taliyah. She's a good champ, but she is just like Yasuo/Riven from OP's post. You will need to be a bit more skilled that the average player of your division if you want to climb.

NatX3001 votes

Thank you for the reply. I will keep your points in mind next time I play ranked.. and yeah Taliyah's roaming aspect is what I find harder to master. I have one more question about farming though. How many CS is good to have at 10 minutes? And 20 minutes? I usually aim to get 75 at 10 minutes (but tend to get 60-65) and 150 at 20 (I get around 125). Are those two numbers good goals for midlane CS? Thanks again for the reply.

Salson1 votes

Depends on champ, as TF, Sol and Taliyah are roamers.

You goal though is 15-25% more than the oposition. Go 100cs vs 80cs and you're doing great.

Cool. I usually keep an eye on the enemy midlaner to judge how good/bad I am doing. Thanks!

Ill be honest tank champs are terrible in bronze unless ridiculously busted like old mundo, or current cho gath. The reasoning is who are you peeling for? The bronze ADC, or the feeding midlaner? My point is you need to stick with easy carry champs, like Darius and yorick. You need champs that can easily take towers while your team face rolls and you take two towers and create pressure for the monkeys. Then your team gets 3 v 4s while you get easy doubles and win the game. Split pushing is THE BEST WAY for low elo climbing. When you gold for sure go tanks, but as a tank it takes a solid 2 waves longer to take a tower without help(which bronze dont do).

No, in low elo nobody will kite you and you will do damage because you're a tank that can get to the adc/midlaner.

Lol youve been out of it for awhile. They dive a carry then team runs away, or misposition so they die while you cant peel for them. or try to fight after they run away so you die then team feeds 1 by 1 for nothing. You dont carry the game with tanks in low elo with the skills that low elo has, you take objectives by yourself until you get to elo where teamates have half a brain. Youre also a midlaner, and have not once played a tank in ranked. Mid is your expertise and I dont even see so much as a galio on your played champs, I climbed out by splitpushing, tanks are too much of a liability in low elo.

by "tanks" im talking about like Darius Yorick Nasus DrMundo Illaoi not really tanks but juggernauts or whatever. Do a lot of damage, can 1v5 without good mechanics like an adc has to, and never dies because nobody "focuses the tank" and buys grevious wounds, when I was in bronze/silver stuff like that was common but yea must have changed tho

Then i wholeheartedly agree with that statement. I just meant like Rammus, Alistar Nautilus Shen Skarner you know do a lot for a team but you need an actual team lol or you just a meatshield that does things right but team lets you die for no reason.

They've heard that Riven / Yasuo / Yi are the best champions to prey on low elo games and rack up insane KDAs. There's tons of videos on youtube. And if you're a diamond playing on a smurf it looks so very easy, since no-one in low elo knows how to CC squat.

But to be honest, if your skills are far above average for your elo, playing the tank is not a good idea. Tanks are a form of equaliser. If you have the highest MMR on your team as a tank, it's easier for your team to lose. The lowest MMR? Easier to be carried. If you're in bronze 1 and are the only one on your team that deserves to escape to silver 5 - that's an issue.

I’m actually in mid silver this season, but I rarely play ranked. I played a lot more ranked a season or two ago. I’m a Yasuo main, and I basically carried myself out of bronze with Yasuo as my main (of course rotating in some other champs). I had a few different reasons as to why I played such a skill-regulated champ though.

  1. The first time I allowed myself to play Yasuo in ranked I made sure I had mastery 5 (before 6 & 7)

  2. I knew I liked the champion and had a lot of potential on him, so I spammed him in normals until I had fully mastered him

  3. The best place to learn how to play champions like Riven or Yasuo in ranked is in fact, in bronze. You’re going to need to learn how to properly play micro and macro with them, as well as learn their matchups and their strengths and weaknesses. Also, how to play them around objectives. I can’t imagine trying to pull Yasuo out for the first time in ranked at a plat or diamon elo, you’d get destroyed.

  4. I have 800K mastery on him now (roundabouts I’m pretty sure.) Silver is just glorified bronze, but he’s still one of my main midlane picks because I’ve acquired a level of skill on him where I can rely on myself and carry a team if need be, which I think is an important attribute when playing solo q.

if u truly mastered yasuo, then u probably can carry urself 1vs9 to platinum, so im not sure if we can call that "fully" mastered. Unless you only have 50 games and/or still climbing.

Riven is a very fun and flashy, and that’s why she’s so attractive

A highly skilled yasuo is about as effective as a first time cho'gath. This is just how the meta works. Why waste the time? Focus on your game sense, map awareness etc and leave the mechanics for later.

must be nice to be in a rank

Well fortunately for you, being in bronze there are so many things you can improve on. if you get better you can beat a chogath with sona top in bronze so don't worry about it too much and learn new things

There is exactly 1 fun to play champion on that list maybe 2 if i add cho who i think is decently fun the other is Trundle. None of those champions are brainless you just have to opt out doing damage and having fun for being a worse tank than straight out picking a tank and hope allies carry you.

I’m not sure what your complaint is

Most of the champions you mentioned are just east to use or can be built in a way that even if they are behind won’t punish them

It doesn’t mean imbalance or that they are OP. Yes, I don’t think bronze people should focus too heavily of champions. Their problem is objective control and vision. I’ve seen bronze games where one team has 15k gold lead and they won’t end because they chasing kill. One accidental teamfight let’s thrnother team catch up and then it’s anyones game

You may think this is not important but it is. You can win a lane with other champions that are a bit harder to play but because your vision and obj control are bad, the Cho’Gath or Darius will eventually kill you. Or the enemy team combo will just be better than yours
