Why is it you can smite Malz's Minion but he gets another ....
Why is it even an option if it cancels itself out....

Huh? Because that's Malz's passive. He summons a voidling every 4th skill cast. Smiting a voidling can still be useful, getting attacked by just 1 voidling is better than 2 voidlings.
Im confused as to what you are talking about? Smiting his Voidling and cancelling his Passive would be broken... How do you think that would be fair to just completely cancel his Passive?
Malzahar doesn't just get voidlings out of nowhere, they come from his passive (so your still forcing him to use resources to summon another)
Summon Voidling gives Malzahar a voidling every 4th spell cast, Voidlings have a lifespan of 21 seconds, and every 7 seconds of their life they will evolve; after 7 seconds they grow into adults (50% more armor and AD) and after 14 seconds they go berserk and get double their base attack speed.
Ignoring a voidling is the worst mistake you can make in the early game.
