Support Item Actives

Hey,

I don't play support a lot, but when I do I play tanky supports that try to engage/peel etc, e.g. Leona Leona . While there is little place to argue that Targon item 3097 is probably the best Item to start with on her, I don't like the items active. I'd much rather have the active of Talisman of Ascension item 3069, because it makes it much more fun to engage.

Each item is usually picked depending on their main stats/passive for lane, and the unique active is just something that goes with it, that's why I think it should be possible to pick the active dynamically.

That's why I'd suggest to add enchantments to these support items, similar to the boot enchantments, to diverse the support build. In some occasions, depending on your champ, your team comp and the enemy team comp, it might be better to have the speed buff active, e.g. if you want to force hard engages, in other situations you might want avoid teamfights and get the the slow active to slow your enemies, and then there is the shield active for the rest to just soak up damage. I think it would add more diversity and possibilities to counterplay for supports. See image for example.

EDIT: People claim that it was a stupid idea because everyone would pick Talisman active because it's simply better. But that is not a problem of my suggestion, it's inherently bad design of the items. The Actives just need to be rebalanced to allow for equally good choices when upgrading.

The thing is though, that's part of what balances these items. If you pick up the item that upgrades into the powerful teamfight initiating speed booster, it better have worse combat stats and lower potential gold generation than the other items. Otherwise, why WOULD you pick the other items?

Your suggestion just makes it so people will pick the best item for laning and upgrade it into the best active. There's no really meaningful choice involved.

Also, please don't overuse the word "counterplay." Its meaning is dampened if you just tack it on in front of everything.

bruh, ur idea is dumb. if u dont like targons then dont build it. each item got its own purpose.

Then you might as well delete talisman. Everyone knows to never purchase ancient coin because compared to the other starting support items it's crap. The only reason people get talisman is for the active. It's common knowledge to start relic or some other support start besides coin and then sell it later to purchase talisman for the active.

This would make the items too diverse and would make your choice meaningless.

The item is designed to provide a specific active based on the choice you make at the beginning of the match.

And chances are, you wouldn't bother getting any other active besides for Ascension's, anyways.

This is a good idea.

Like you said yourself, you don't play a lot of support. item 3401 can be a crazy strong items on Leona. Don't always think you should keep it for your carry. If they focus you feel free to use it on yourself. In combination with your kit you would soak a lot more damage with it than your support ever would been able to. I see so many supports going in not using their active and endup dieing for it. Additionaly did you ever tried to 1v1 someone with it. It's just hilarious that they think they can think you and suddenly you popup that shield. They try to run away from it but your stun will do the rest.

Some of you probaly remembered Gragas support. One of the most common strategies was to drink, dash in, selfcast shield and boom you won the teamfight. You just soaked all the damage they where able to deal.
