Summoner Icon Description

I didn't really find a proper Board for this, so I'm going to use the Story & Art board (because it kinda contains/targets art). Please forgive me.

My idea was to add descriptions to summoner icons, so people actually know what they mean. Sometimes I see icons of other people or own icons and I don't know how they or I got them. It would be nice to have a description of sorts, see attached images.

While this feature might just look like a gimmick, I think it would add a nice level of transparency. It also makes icons more worthy to strive for as the option to see what it was rewarded for allows people to show off, as it adds extra value and weight to the individual icons.

The first two images are examples when choosing a summoner icon. The third one is an idea that when you are in the loading screen, you can hover over a players summoner icon to see what it was rewarded for.

EDIT: Also an important point is that icons have evolved to League of Legends own little achievement system to a certain degree. Thanks to kanacho for the comment.

EDIT2: CaptainMårvelous had the idea to add flavored text, this I added a 4th attachment SummonerIconIdea04.png as an example

Good idea but I'd prefer it if there was, say, a paragraph of flavor text related to the item instead of just "This is how I got it"

I second this.

Some of the flavor text could be pretty funny xD

**Card Name: **Wave of Indifference

**Types: **Sorcery

**Card Text: **X target creatures can't block this turn.

Flavor Text:

"Darius?" "Yeah?" "There's a goblin sneaking up on you." "So?" "Just sayin'."

Flavor text is half the reason I ever played Card games.(Magic and the like)

I really liked your idea and added a new image to the original post representing it.

I feel like knowing why you got them is nice, because you might not remember all of the reasons why you got the icons. Not to mention, icons are sort of like League's versions of achievements. It seems pretty nice to know why you have them in the first place.

TheYellowpaper2 votes

That's a pretty good point. I added that to my original post if you don't mind.

Yeah no problem :)

It's a good idea, although all of the descriptions on how to get each icon is fairly simple to find.

You are right for most of the icons and also if you have played the game for a few years. But there are lots of new players that have never seen these icons before. Even I didn't know some icons existed and I've been playing this game for roughly 4 years. Just a few days ago I started playing Teambuilder for fun and started seeing icons I have never seen before. Those were Teambuilder specific icons.

At that time it would have been nice if I was able to just hover over the summoner icon in the loading screen and read a description, e.g. "This icon is rewarded for 5 wins with a support in Teambuilder.". And there is also the reasoning that some icons might be ugly but hard to achieve. Adding the description gives certain icons more value as said in my thread post and players might be more motivated to get icons as it is more than just the icon itself you get. It's like a trophy and the guarantee that other players can truely appreciate it. I hope I make sense. ._.

Basically what I'm trying to say is that icons will be more desirable and valuable. It adds a similar feel to them like old legacy skins or generally skins that are not available anymore.

Right, that could help the really bleak loading screen. There needs to be like a whack-a-Teemo minigame or something.... In the loading screen... You could pick Poppy,Jayce ,or Taric

PhoenixOfHeaven1 votes

Or you could just wack Teemo with Poppy Jayce or Taric in game.

Jokes aside, I would like this. obviously need other games too...

Would clear up some questions for newer players, explaining why my Diana icon has a horse in the corner, and the Riven and Tryn ones don't.

It's called Perfect Ascension. Not "Ascension Domination".

Nice idea! Would love to see it implemented.

Just yesterday I was talking to friends about how this needs to happen. I really like the idea of having descriptions available in the loading screen as well.

I have considered making this thread a number of times. I actually find myself holding the mouse over icons, waiting for hover-text to appear. I'm always wondering "wait, what was this one for again?".

Really, this needs to happen.

This would be a nice little tweak :)

The internet is getting to me. I could have sworn that this said twerk the first time I looked at it >.<

But back to the topic, I like this suggestion as well.

That's actually pretty neat o.o

This seems like a good idea, as there is no downside to it. It gives more information to the game, and no more questions saying "how did you get that icon" and more of "wow that icon is amazing and nice job getting it"

Deep Terror Nami2 votes

Great idea. I was surprised to find icons didn't have this info when I started.

I have wanted this too.

What's a Summoner?

JK, I support your opinon op.

Usually I just go here http://leagueoflegends.wikia.com/wiki/Summoner_icon If I see one I never seen before. But, I'm 2009 so I've seen them all.

I also read patch notes and updates that usually tell you what icons are happening. This always helps as well, like with the Shurima event, few asked me where it came from. Bro, read the updates.

New Summoner's Rift icons, official post, right there, in your face, for all to see, can't miss it, front page. http://na.leagueoflegends.com/en/news/game-updates/features/sr-open-beta-begins

Not sure what your post is supposed to mean because it doesn't make sense.

Sure, you can always find information on a wiki page, but it just makes it harder for the player to find the information when it could easily be in the game client. There is literally no reason to make that information not available to the player immediately.

Imagine your runes wouldn't say what they improve, instead they'd just be called "Rune of Offense" and you had to check on a wiki how much extra damage that rune gives. It'd be tedious. Though not to the same degree this also applies to icons.

It does make sense. Your example doesn't. Runes are an important part of gameplay, so their descriptions are pretty much mandatory. The description for an icon that is not present at all during games is not.

As well, you're posting in the boards of the developer site. They're not found in game. If you can do that, you can easily google "summoner icon".

TheYellowpaper1 votes

So just to make sure, what you are saying is that you are against improving the client by adding more information to it because you can find it on a wikipedia page anyway? This is an improvement with literally no downside but the cost of implementing it.

Of course I can find the description somewhere on a wiki, or possibly a few more other 3rd party sites, but why not make life for everyone easier and implement that information in the client where it belongs in the first place?

In the end everyone is entitled to their own opinion, I just don't see why some are so eager to fight against improvement.

can someone fill me in on what these new icons i have are actually from??

Tarreb1 votes

Winning a game from the blue or red side on the new summoners rift teambuilder beta.

BeatzBoyFTW1 votes

So I wonder how the description is for the icons that everyone has since level 1.

Sorgens1 votes

Although a nice idea, this is really not needed.

Anyone curious enough to see what an icon is can find a full description and list of icons by googling "summoner icon".

The LoL wikia is the very first result of that search. It seems to be well updated, and their summoner icon article seems to have all of them as well as descriptions on how to get them.

this is a really cool idea... it would be something simple to implement and would be cool to see what events you have missed and how they were awarded should be part of the information
