Flat CDR vs Scaling CDR glyths.

I'm at an impasse right now regarding these two rune types: x9 Flat CDR Glyths = 7.47% CDR right off the bat or x9 Scaling CDR Glyths = 7.29% CDR at level 9 (Beyond that obviously it will outscale flat cdr glyths)

People always say that runes are most beneficial for the early game before items start coming into play; so my dilemma is whether or not I should just use x9 Flat CDR for the early-mid game stats or x9 Scaling CDR for late game.

Personally I see both Magic Resist and CDR Runes as exception to that rule.

Those I run scaling as opposed to flat.

Do you need them early game?

If not, run scaling.

I'd also say it depends on your Champ:

Mana-based Champions would not really benefit from flat CDR as they can't really spam their abilities anyway, whereas non-resource based Champs like Vladimir probably would.

You want scaling CDR even as Vlad.

Your E/Q has such a massive CD early that you're better off not heavily relying on abilities at all until you start leveling E and have your first 20% CDR from item 3158 item 3108. Because of this, scaling is the way to go. Hell, I run 2 scaling CDR Quints, scaling HP yellows, and the rest scaling AP, to push his mid-game and late game farming/fighting even if he was set behind early (which isn't all that uncommon).

Now that Abyssal's been changed, its probably better to use magic pen reds again, however.

3x per level 6x flat 10% cdr at 18lvl

Doesn't really seem worth it, IMO. I'd rather go full flat or full scaling. 10% at 18 is nothing.

It's a lot. That means you need 1 item less with cdr to reach max in build and can focus on other stats.

No, it is a waste of your rune slots. If your goal is lvl18 you should just go full scaling.

Except nothing in the game gives you the difference of 5%. The only champions that it's worth running CDR runes on want 40% (or 45%), so you may as well use those other rune slots for something else. There is no point to running any number of CDR runes than 10% @lvl18

Zac disagrees.

Quick check on champion.gg shows Zac taking both Quint and Blue scaling CDR or no CDR runes. Combine the rune page with his build of item 3158 and item 3065 and you have 40% CDR.

Thanks for proving my point.

The thing is, it allows you to eventually replace those CDR boots with better ones - such as item 3047 vs. crazy AD Champions.

If he drops the boots he goes down to 30% CDR though.

Scaling Quints/Blues + item 3065 = 40%.

Oh shit, my bad. I forgot it was 3 Quints not 1.

Anyway, if you run both blues and quints then you can run all 9 blue scaling runes, but if you do not you are still wasting 5% cdr.

It should also be noted that Zac is quite a unique case here. He gets everything; damage, utility and even sustain with CDR. It is just a great stat on him. I'm not too sure I'd ever invest so heavily in CDR on any other Champion.

I've done it on Vlad for swifties/mercs/tabi/sorcs before Zhonya's+Abyssal got CDR.

However, that was before Ghost was massively buffed so taking Ionian is the go-to option either way.

9 flat CDR + 1 Quint is 10 % CDR at lvl 1 - most AD casters run this along with the 5 % CDR mastery for 45 %. 3 Quints + 9 flat CDR + 5 % CDR mastery is 20 % CDR at lvl 1 - great for Nasus and some toplaners that like to rush Cleaver/FH/Gauntlet and have 40 % CDR early, focusing on items without CDR.

ive been running scaling quints and glyphs on ap ezreal so i can get 45% with just my sheen. 30% scaling per lvl is like 1.2% per lvl so by time you need any meaningful cdr you have it like lvl 10 you have around 25% with just a sheen. lets you completely ignore cdr and focus on damage and shit. then you have 45% at max lvl and full build. i dont really like aggresion super early as it often leads to getting fucked by ganks or whatever so i avoid running 15 ap lvl 1.

There's absolutely no reason to go above 10% CDR from runes. If you need it early, go flat. If you don't need it early, take enough scaling runes to hit exactly 10%, not more.

There are no finished items that give less than 10% CDR, so you'll end up not being able to reach the hard cap without wasting stats should you take more or less than 10%.
