Reading guides can help you in the short run, but you won't imrpove that much afterwards.

Things you should know about items:

  • What are key items on my champion that are basically used in (almost) every situation anyway?
  • What items should I take depending on my opponent? (e.g. taking Randuin's Omen as tank against crit heavy teams or against an enemy crit-carry that is already ahead)
  • What items do I want for my own playstyle? Do I want a fast and early game oriented build or a late game oriented one?

Understanding what the purpose, strengths and weaknesses of items are is mandatory to handle that and it's something that you have to learn on the long run. It's nothing that will appear immediately, but if you continue to put some time in reading and trying you will get better at that at some point.

the way i see it is... every champion has a core item which means must build it which is generally 1 or 2 or even 3 items and the rest is completely situational for example ROa and tear is core to Ryze as he would benefit from the mana and AP ... the other items are situational.. want more CDR? get lucidity boots.. Want MR? get abbysal or banshee ... want your spells to slow people? get Rylais... Hope this helps :o
