AP Varus Works.

  • Sorc Boots with Furor (Helps to Chase and Penetrate magically.)

  • Nashors Tooth (Bonus AP on-hit and attack speed to get your passive to three stacks faster.)

  • Luden's Echo (Bonus AP on-hit damage and movement speed to chase + Extra AP.)

  • Rylai's (The Slow is superb for chasing or kiting. Health is also very useful + Extra AP.)

  • You Can Lichbane if you Want or a Bloodthirster for sustain

  • Morrellonomicon (This gives you alot of CDR and Mana Regen to compensate for the excessive usage of skils.)

  • The purpose of AP Varus is to do on-hit damage with your W passive, as well as extra damage when you apply three stacks and then use an ability. This is not a troll guide, this build can work under the right circumstances.

  • How to Play Ap Varus: Ap Varus relies on his ultimate very much since it does a great deal of AP damage, but most importantly you want to be trying to auto-attack as much as possible, and once having 2+ stacks of Blight you then want to either E or Q or even Ult to do massive damage.

  • Kill Combo: Ultimate + E + AutoAttack(s) no more than 3 + Q + AutoAttack(s) no more than 3

  • Poke Combo: Autoattack(1-2) + E + Autoattack(1-2) + Q

  • Teamfighting: Try to autoattack as many people as you can and then use your abilities as they clump more and more. Start by trying to auto-attack w/o getting caught and then Q or E before an engage

  • Trading: Poke only unless you can get the kill. So utilize the combo above, or keep trying hard to reach 3 stacks and then pop it with preferably Q for alot of Burst.

  • Tip: If an enemy is running away do not run away as well (if you know this isn't a bait) proceed to auto-attack them as they flee, especially if they are a Melee champion (with no gap-closers because of their kit or CDs) once you feel like you got enough auto-attacking done then Q

  • Cons: May get flamed by pessimistic teammates for trying this build

  • Pros: You're having fun, still does damage, a tanky aspect to the build, out-damages AD Varus if utilized properly with all the on-hit effects. You still hurt towers/structures with this build.

AP Varus & AD TwistedFate have 1 thing in common:

Their Q is useless. (Yes, i know Varus's Q procs his W passive, but js)

we know it works but i want to have ad varus viable i dont want to turn to a gimmick that should not be in the game in the first place its all these stupid hybrid scalings thats probly taking "champion power budget" with riots logic

Hmm... I've always loved AP Varus... or at least the idea of it as it puts a heavy emphasis on his triple AA into ability cadence. Now I've always thought that one of his weakest aspects was his complete lack of sustain as most of his damage comes from his on-hit magic damage and blight procs... neither of which work with lifesteal nor spellvamp. So have you considered the fact that the new Gunblade is exactly what AP Varus needs for sustain? O.o It also brings with it some bonus magic damage and a slow with it's active.

The current build I'm going with is: item 3006 item 3115 item 3146 item 3100 item 3135 item 3089

Now Sorc vs. Zerker's is a matter of preference imo. Either more AS to stack blight faster or more pen to make your blight procs sting a bit more. Nashor's is obviously his core item as he needs the AS and CDR to stack and proc blight. Gunblade is purely for sustain and a little extra damage/utility. Lich for another 10% CDR and good damage on spellblade procs (especially to towers). Follow that up with Void and Deathcap and you've got a full build.

What does AP Varus need and what is this build missing?

He needs AS but not more AS than he needs to efficiently stack blight on a single target. More AS is nice for faster stacking and multi-target stacking but too much and it is wasted while his abilities are on cooldown. Zerker's and Nashor's gives the perfect amount imo. Which brings us to the next thing he needs: CDR because you can't proc blight with your abilities on cooldown. Nashor's is beautiful and another 10% from Lich is good. Which leaves us 10% short. I debated for a while on this considering Morello but ultimately deciding that I would simply get 10% CDR from runes. So if he has enough AS and full CDR he really only needs more damage... mainly Magic Pen and AP. Way I see it is Void and Deathcap are easily your best options for pure damage at this point. Is sustain absolutely necessary? Ehh... not really... but I've always been a fan of Gunblade and the sustain on it is beautiful.

So why not Luden's or more Pen? Well... when you have this full build you end up with just over 500 AP... Which is 10% more %maxhealth damage per blight stack... With a 5% base +10% = 15% x 3 blight stacks = 45% of their max health with 35% magic pen... 60% if you use your E to proc a 4th stack... Not to mention the 40% x 500 = 200 bonus magic damage on-hit, 200 magic damage from Gunblade and 250 from Lich... Basically prioritizing higher AP scalings and AP stacking.

I also think a more Pen orientated build could be effective utilizing early 30 flat + 35% from Sorc + Guise into Void but I don't usually do that on champions that don't also want Abyssal and Wit's End...

On something of an off note... I have this theory that Varus' E could now potentially proc 5 blight stacks... Basically if you AA an enemy 3 times and then throw your E and immediately throw a 4th AA while your E is in the air your 4th AA will land as your E lands adding another blight stack after your E has burned the first 3 and then detonating the 4th as the E finishes landing. Now how do I get a 5th stack in there? Well with the recent buff to his R I think it's possible. Whenever you hit an enemy with your R they get 3 blight stacks over the course of their snare (2 seconds). Assuming you could get the timing down: R > AA > E > AA R lands (they immediately get a blight stack) > AA lands (they get a blight stack from the AA and a second one from R) > E lands (procing 3 blight stacks) > Second AA lands before E finishes landing, causing them to get another blight stack in addition to the last blight stack from R, both of which are immediately proced... Does that sound plausible? O.o
