Despite losing 7 of my placements and getting carried to victory in the other 3, I got placed in Silver 4. Why wasn't I ranked Bronze 5 where I should be? This system makes no sense at all. People can win all their placements and get ranked the exact same place as me, despite the fact that I am worse than an AFK on the team. Is it just to ruin other people's experience of the ranked system by putting bad players in higher teirs than they should be?

Don't put too much thought into it, Riot has a really bad ranking system/matchmaking system.
SpinachSpinach1 votesBut I can't auto de rank myself without playing games, which I don't want to do since I know for a fact I will lose and lose for my team. The exact same thing happens with normals. For whatever reason I'm put up against players that are so far out of my skill range I genuinely think that the game is just bugged to even place me with them when I can't even dodge skill shots yet.

Look back over the years and people are complaining about how unjust the match ups are, the trollers, afkers etc, and all are met with "it's you, improve your game, some games are bad / some good, bad days" and all that balony. Trollers from B5 all the way to you S4 so farm and its not letting up. They are AFK, they are so bad it makes you wonder how you can be paired with 3 year olds with 4 thumbs. Its just bad. This is a Riot ranking system problem, not player problem.
