Biggest mistakes that Bronze/Silver/Gold players do in "Elo Hell"

SHerv··27 votes·13,244 views

Hey everyone. I wrote and posted this exact discussion topic almost 3 years ago. I think it's more prevalent now than ever. Please read, and let me know your thoughts:

Dear players,

I'm a high Diamond player and I constantly hear from my real life friends that low ELO is impossible to pass once one is locked in it. After making a smurf and exposing myself to this "Elo Hell" I've made a conclusion to why games seem so hard, and how people can easily get out of, or avoid this "Elo Hell".

  1. The first part that I want to touch on is why games in low ELO seem even harder to win than games in high Diamond sometimes. My first game in Silver 3 I noticed almost instantly that everyone is stuck in the mindset that they MUST carry the game in order to get out. With this shared philosophy, about everyone in the game is playing, in a lack of a better term, selfish. I can half-reason with why everyone feels this way, they consistently play with others who believe in the same idea or other players they deem "don't belong (boosted)".

On the other hand, players need to realize that this isn't Starcraft or Warcraft, where skill is determined through one vs one player abilities. This is a team game and in team games skill is much rather determined through how well players can sacrifice for the sake of the team's victory. Compatibility is key in team games, and this isn't any different for League of Legends. If you're asked or notice that your team needs a certain champion to have an edge, don't turn your back on them because "you need to carry solo only".

  1. This transitions well into the second part of my synopsis which focuses on what low ELO players should do to grind their way out of "Elo Hell". If being selfish is what keeps you locked in Bronze/Silver/Gold, then maybe being SELFLESS will be a key quality to breaking free and ranking up. This won't come easy, especially to the players who have played for many years. However, slowly try to embed characteristics of being selfless, sacrificing for the team, and getting more victories than reports. Remember, You don't need to carry every game, in fact, the best players in any sport or e-sport don't carry their teams by putting them on their backs. They do it by getting all their teammates to play the best of their abilities!

Good Luck, and let me know if this helped or not!

You can blame the Boards and the community for that one, because it's the League of Legends playerbase that has pushed that bullshit. Everytime somebody complains or tries to get advice about climbing out of Elo Hell, you get the same snide parroted response of "If you're good enough, you'll carry yourself out".

Prozzak8 votes

But that is true. Carrying yourself out does not mean that you need to literally carry the game by getting all of the kills. You can be the driving force between getting someone else fed, setting up objectives, setting up a trade that leads to you dying but your team getting 3 kills.

Carrying the game does not simply mean that you go 15-2 or something. There are plenty of other ways to carry a game.

Strawberrycocoa5 votes

Right but most people equate "carrying" with "Killing". You have to also explain what you MEAN by "carry yourself" but most people don't bother to do that when they give the advice.

Bob the Toastr1 votes

This, 100% this. People do not understand that only having a great KDA will not win you the game. You have to take that and use it to get your team rolling, through objectives, or superior vision control, or roaming to other lanes and helping get them going.

Even if not intentional, four brain dead teammates incidentally distracting while you push is enough to 'carry'. There is no literal carry in a team game. At least one other person has to do something correct or understand how to abuse your 'carry potential'.

#1 tip for climbing and just being good: even if it means not getting as many kills, just don't die needlessly

this is the most upvotes i've ever gotten without a single downvote, someone help pls

I really think the client should display "gold given to enemy team via deaths" as a post game stat.

Aseraan1 votes

So we can make a new form of shaming in the brink of calling ppl Iron you want something else you can shame on ppl too?

Just to summerize:

Rank shaming Damage dealt shaming Level shaming Champion shaming Mastery shaming KDA shaming Skin shaming(ye i met this too)

Pls fill me in if i missed one or 10 im sure i missed some.

Verxint1 votes

No, I want a metric that helps people understand just how much their high deaths matter.

I don't know what anything you just said has to do with this

Aseraan1 votes

How much this would show them any better than 2 effin letter that tells you that you died 16 times?

It would be either meaningless or used for shaming just as everything else.

Verxint1 votes

Well for one, a lot of people think dying a lot is okay if you get a lot of kills. The 20/16 yasuo who trades constantly is going to have given far more gold to the enemy than someone who went 0\9. Second, many people really don't understand the full implications of dying, especially when they're ahead. The guy who is 20/4 probably gave a lot more gold in those 4 deaths than the feeder he blames for going 1/8.

lol i could write a 20 page paper on all the mistakes they make in this elo.

but the biggest three are as follow.

  1. STOP TRYING TO FIGHT AND GO FOR THE FREE OBJECTIVE!!!

  2. PLACE YOUR DAMN WARDS, ( its bad enough riot removes all the ways i could actually do this for the team myself, even if your bad at looking at the map yourself.. i can ping you if i see you getting ganked and i spot it.

  3. u don't need to "win lane" u just need to "not completely lose it". losing a tower or going 20 cs behind at 15 min isnt going to cost us the game... giving the enemy 7 free kills in laning phase likely IS .

I agree. That is precisely why I want to turn this to the attention of Lower Elo Players who are looking to have a positive change.

Not all low elo players are like that, a few of them can actually admit they’re bad and actually try to get better instead of blaming it on the jungler or support for why they fed 10 kills.

I say these three things in every game, my teams flame me and feed harder. They don't take constructive criticism well. That alone is a huge factor for being sub gold

Hate to disagree with you, but I am Honor 4 and hard stuck silver. I got there by keeping quiet about ally mistakes, joking with allies/enemies, and focusing on my game and what I need to do to improve. I consider myself among the most sportsmanlike players at my elo and it does not have any significant impact on the outcomes of my matches.

It doesn't reduce the trolls I get, the flamers I get, the afk's I get. It doesn't reduce the number of times 3+ allies of mine suffer 10+ deaths each. It does nothing to stop the number of times my teams have thrown after securing a lead AND baron.

It all boils down to luck. You need to have big win streaks to offset your losses to climb the ladder and that requires being matched with competent players regularly or matched against players who are even less competent about the game mechanics and the champions they play than your team.

Either that or you DO have to hard carry your teams by playing at a skill level well beyond that of your current elo.

Don't confuse this with me complaining about my experience. I've long since made peace with it and I continue to focus on the one thing I can control and change. And that's me. Maybe, one day, I will make gold or higher. But I'm better off content with what I have than I am allowing frustration consume me over what I have yet to accomplish or achieve.

Honestly, if more people inherited your peaceful approach, it would help a lot of low elo players. That is all I'm trying to preach at the end of the day. Selfish plays are the result of anger and negligence. It's not what or how team games are supposed to be played.

Kaisha2 votes

Its not a team game, it never was. That was the point of DOTA, teamwork meant little, fed was all that mattered.

Honestly the nonsense that gets thrown around on these boards. If you guys actually like MOBAs (and not just DOTA/LOL clones) go play some of the originals. AoS (they were called AoS games back in the day, not MOBA for a reason), ToB, etc... Games where teamwork mattered and items didn't make you god mode.

The entire point of DOTA was that you could get a couple lucky kills, get the right items, and solo the opposing team. That's the very anti-thesis of teamwork.

And also how LOL works now. Pick a hyper carry , get lucky early kill with ignite cheese or your jung is your buddy for first 6 minutes and that's it, you won. Unless the other team plays objectives and does not chase you through the jungle into an ambush over and over.

I've played selflessly for 4+ years now. I've played for the team. Tried to get others fed and to help put those who are behind.

My issue is that I have to dumb down how I play. I have to be selfish because if I don't my adc will run in and die because they didnt look at their map. My mid laner would come go gank and dive them and ignore the ping spam not to because I'm too low on hp and or mana. Simply put, the things that help you win at higher elo's simply get ignored. So you're always playing with people vastly better than you or vastly worse and it's so rare to have a cooperative match.

the worst part is when u have to join the teamfight even though u know we have an 80% chance of losing it and our team should be running away and if i dont go in its 100% certain they will die, and the game will end, and i know i cant defend the base myself against 5... so i have to take what i know is the least bad option and join the teamfight we should have never fought in the first place

And of course being support you're blamed at the end for everything.

Bad KDA... you're dragging the team down. Good KDA, you're stealing kills.

As support there's nothing you can do to get yourself out of ELO hell solo short of sheer dumb luck. Its funny because the better I play, the less likely I'll win. If I've gone away from a bit and come back, I'm rusty, I don't know the items/changes/new champs, no idea what is what or where to go, missing skill shots, I'll win most games. After getting back into the groove, solid item builds, understand new champs/mechanics, nailing skill shots like a pro... loss after loss after loss.

As a solo support, my performance in game has no bearing on the outcome of the game. Unless you are a carry or assassin, you don't matter.

This is why mage supports are way better in low elo. This is because a Lux or a Brand actually CAN carry the game, even as the support, so it's a lot easier to climb on these champions. The problem is the one that I fell into -- you develop a unique playstyle as you climb and it doesn't translate well into higher ranks.

nubulas21 votes

I got pretty good with morg last year but I just don't like mages in league.

Yeah what works to get you out of bronze doesn't work in the higher elo.

I am just not trying to climb anymore, I just gave up completely. Just play a few to waste time. If I don't win one after a couple games, I play a bot game to get win of the day bonus and log off.

SHerv5 votes

I completely understand, and if there was one thing I would change in my argument from 3 years ago, it's that Solo/Duo Ranked League games are role dependent. If I were to give you any advice, it would be to try out Mid or Jungle. Get acquainted to them, learn them, and slowly get better at making you're team better. I'll be writing a more in-depth discussion right now on what I mean by role dependent and how differing roles contribute in differing ways to the team.

Additionally, if you are adamant on playing as a support, I would advise on finding an ADC duo and build chemistry with them. This is mainly because ADC and Support should typically act as one force for the majority of the game. If they are not in-sync, they will both suffer, as well as the team.

BestPudgeNA6 votes

My experience from climbing out of bronze to silver then silver to gold this season has taught me the exact opposite is true. When i started playing solo Q i played a lot of Zac and focused heavily on getting my teammates ahead putting them in good spots for the team as well as starting good team fights and peeling very heavily i would ward for my teammates moreso then myself. What i was greeted with was a lot a failures and a negative win rate on a champ that i honestly play so much better then anything else. Then i watch trick2g smurf and decided to give Udyr a try and played basically as selfish as possible the entire game, I would constantly ignore my teammates needs for my own. I would basically only gank when it was a free kill and i would always try to get the last hit. I would show up to already winning lanes when towers were about too fall just to steal tower kill gold even when the help wasn't needed. I would never group and always split. I've pretty much continued the same style for the entire season and any time i deviated from that path i would be reward with a loss streak and any time i pushed that concept too the extreme i would climb faster.

Also after playing climbing i'm very convinced that S5-3 is much harder to climb in then S2+. Low silver is full of turbo feeders and the only way out once you LP gains are kneecap is to hardstomp every game.

I chuckle at this post. It's almost like this one believes there are no Utility Supports or Tanks in Low Elo.

SHerv3 votes

Then my message to those in Low Elo is to operate and use those utility supports or tank champions if the goal is to go up the ladder.

Ravenhale5 votes

Well that's just a confusing remark. There are people that literally main Utility Supports and Tanks in low elo. Being "selfish" is not what is holding them back.

SHerv3 votes

What is holding them back is communication perhaps. Everyone has access to chat in champ selection for a reason, even if you are suspended or limited in game. Tell you're team of your intentions. Instant absorption of winning philosophy and mentality is a real thing!

Objectives win games, mate. If you're picking Soraka or Leona... you are not taking any objectives by yourself even when it's the right call. I should also say you're not even able to defend objectives with those picks. Team ignores the supers destroying nexus towers to take a meaningless fight at the ocean dragon... nothing you can do about it. Team wins a fight and decides to back and buy instead of grabbing a tower or dragon first... guess you can ward a little and maybe the team will go back for it.

There's a reason why I have reluctantly tried to become a decent Tristana/Fortune player, and it's not to murder everything on the rift. When those scenarios happen, I can actually defend stuff or take objectives. Sure the team will probably lose that garbage dragon fight without the ADC, but they might not even go for it without me there. Hopefully. Well, the jungler will die for certain, and probably the support when they try to save the jungler. Possibly the whole team since those scenarios tend to play out like knocking down a row of dominoes. Yea, I guess that scenario won't end up much better, but at least there will still be nexus towers when the enemy team comes to stomp my yordle arse. Or they'll go to baron while I get flamed to high heaven.

Eh, I love this game. Teammates are too comical to get too upset about it.

I stopped playing support recently and its so much easier to win. I don't need to spam ping my team mates so they don't let huge waves crash - I can just take them myself. I don't need to spam ping my team mates when the enemy adc or someone is taking a shit path/can get caught out - I can kill them myself.

I don't need to spam ping to get someone to take a a free tower - I can siege it myself.

yeah one of the biggest reason i pick Lux and Morgana is thier wave clear..

for some inexplicable reason after about 15 min no one tries to cs bot anymore.. i need to be able to set up slow pushes before we fight. ( which u know wont happen anyways becuase i cant get these noobs to WAIT TEN FUCKING SECONDS!!! so even if we dont gain anything from the fight we have the minion take the tower.

wave manipulation. no on in this elos does it.. or expects it.. they see "TEAMFIGHT!!! MUST GET KILLS!!!" and will completely ignore the minions taking thier inhib tower and thier inhib.. sadly this goes for both teams.. and im uslly the one who goes to defend the tower, and if i wasn't playing a support with waveclear that tower would be dead

Honestly dude, most of the people that don't go on this forum are most of the ones that feed. The urge to get knowledge about how to climb out is nonexistent to, let's say, that Yi who's constantly trying to invade but keeps dying cause of it and ends up going 3-13. Especially the ones that aren't even English...in the NA Server...you know, the ones that type in Asian characters and have extremely broken English (no offense...). Yi going 3-13 was a real example btw.

Per experence, I could do as good in my lane as is expected, maybe go 15-2 and it really doesn't matter because if every other lane is feeding, my kills aren't enough to win the game. You're right, 'carry yourself out' is wrong because you should play with the team, but it really doesn't work if your team is being uncooperative or making bad plays even if you advise them against it...very common in the elo you speak of, mind you.

Let me throw you an example of an unwinnable game - we have no frontline because muh carry champions, but we do have an Amumu jungle that could be a tank...the guy tries to go full AP and barely kills anyone/dies to Xin multiple times for trying. I tell him to go tanky but he continues to finish his Deathcap, and continues to be useless cause Xin could kill him regardless of his Deathcap.

Hell, this game I just played, we had a Fiora that ended with 3-12...Fiora's not even good right now but whatever...and the only frontline we have is Noctourne who completed ignored our lane even though their bot lane was overextended 85% of the time, and playing aggressive. There's realistically nothing I can do about Jayce who's 8-0 by 15min in another lane. Brand tried to 1v1 the Ashe who's arguably stronger than him. Nothing I can do to help the (end game scores) 3-12 Fiora, 0-7 Lissandra. Even Brand's 8-12 wasn't that great because that's still 12 deaths. I admittedly didn't do well myself but it wasn't as game breaking. The two times the Jayce died are cause he got last-hit by me (I believe he would've escaped if I wasn't there) or he was caught in my ult (which I intended for).

There's nothing that can help anyone in this ELO who don't read forums, reddit, or guides by pros...they just have to stop playing or finally realize they're bad and try to figure out what they're doing wrong.

I admittedly lose my lane time to time but it very rarely makes the game unwinnable because I have a decent idea of how to play from behind.

I personally think Riot should put end of season rewards at Plat+ next season so people can actively try to get better instead of just feed and troll and shit once they get to Gold, and maybe try to actively hunt boosters or smurfs that are being paid to fly a noob to plat. Or they could do my other idea in this topic: https://boards.na.leagueoflegends.com/en/c/gameplay-balance/uIphT0gh-is-it-a-plausible-idea-to-adhere-a-matchmaking-queue-for-certain-amounts-of-deaths but it's unlikely they'll do that suggestion.

Another thing i often saw in low Elo is: People can't let go. This could mean backing up after getting an objective instead of overstaying. This could also mean backing up after a 1on1 where both of you drop on 5% HP and your teammates are there to secure the kill. Many players still try to get the kill and die, although the enemy was dead anyway. Just be happy with an assist! Also: Just let go if something went wrong. Sometimes you make a plan in your head for the next seconds. For example: "oh look, this situation right now is perfect to flash and kill that guy" but while you run at him you realize something goes wrong. For example he is backing away. Then you NEED to drop your plan! I know it's hard. But my theory is: most people actually KNOW when they do a shitty move but they can't let go! Because the plan is already in their heads. It's like chasing someone that is 1% HP. You KNOW you can't reach him anymore but you don't wanna realize it cause you are so angry that he will get away with it. So you chase him and die under turret. Just save your flash and use it next time in a better situation.

LordGeovanni2 votes

biggest mistake i see down here is that everyone plays so safe that they do nothing all game takes the farm pushes the wave leaves dont hit the tower because 1v4 at tower . pushes minions to inner tower recall immediately even though 3 of the enemy team dead and top is dealing with 1 of the enemy laners. etc etc other things like half the enemy team dead some one pings baron they dance around the pit instead of rushing the baron loses 5v2 then says see that was a stupid call. frankly a feeder that tries to get objectives is preferable to people who play safe ace the enemy team in front of a tower and recall because they at 20% hp (despite having lifesteal or a healer around) instead of doing damage to tower or objectives

chipndip12 votes

Only thing that guarantees consistent climbing in solo queue is defeating laning opponents on hard carry champions. Being selfless should work on paper, but people have such a shitty understanding of the game that it doesn't actually mean anything.

Kaisha2 votes

Tip #1... don't play support. Tip #2, pick a FOTM carry. The rest is nonsense. There is no team play when carries/assassins can delete people at will from the game, have infinite (or near) dashes, and scale to god-mode off only 2-3 kills.

You won't get ahead in every game, so it's just as important to know how to get carried- and play safe and smart - as it is to know how to carry. And I don't mean snowball and get 23 kills.
