Why does my top laner constantly feed?

Why do top laners feed out of their ass? They play high dmg champions but feed so they literally provide nothing to the team and always refuse to go for tank build. It's making it impossible for me to climb since top lane just runs it down and its a 4v5 for the rest of game every game. It always just seems to be that my top laner is always at a huge disadvantage no matter the matchup. Sometimes I play top and win lane but my bot lane would feed harder than how my top laners would and I would get shredded by Vayne or Twitch. It's honestly pissing me off how many times this happens. Does anyone have any tips or advice for this?

My circle of friends have over the years come to refer what your describing as "the curse of the squishy top laner". Legend has it that if you are a 4-man normal queue montezuma himself will curse you to have a top laner who picks a champion with zero utility who feeds horribly and never picks up a single defensive stat.
