Why there needs to be an option to switch between the old HUD and the new one
I've been playing League since early season 1 (~March 2011) and have never EVER thought that the old HUD was impractical. The new HUD scrunches everything into the bottom right corner and it gives me a headache. The old HUD had a "section" for every piece of information that you needed:
The top-left was for seeing the enemies items and stats (which is still in the new HUD); The middle-left was for checking your allies' health, mana, if their ult was up, and the chat; The bottom-left was for checking your stats, buying items, checking your experience and level, and seeing which items you had; The middle-bottom was for checking your spells, your spells CD's, leveling up your spells, your mana, your health, your SS, which buffs you had (if any), and to B; The bottom-right was for checking your minimap, pinging (if you didn't use G and V, which I didn't), changing your options, manually checking the scoreboard, and other customizations; The top-right was for your KDA, CS, each team's kills, FPS, ping, and game time.
The new HUD just has everything in the bottom-middle and bottom-right.
Another problem with the new HUD is the animations for leveling a spell. I've already played six games with the new HUD and every single game, when I level a spell, I think "Why I am out of mana?" The animations for getting a spell for the first time are also quite distracting, for they create a border around the spell, so your eyes get drawn to the border. For people who used to use the pings that were on the map instead of G and V, the new HUD forces them to change how they play. Personally, moving my hand to the G and V button is quite inconvenient because it takes my hand away from spells such as spell shield (I play Sivir a lot, and pinging sometimes allows allies to realize I'm in danger without me having to take away my hand from the E button so that I can shield from CC).
However, the new HUD does have some redeeming qualities such as the enemy death timers so that you don't have to look at tab for them. Also the "timer" on your teammates' ults are nice.
Now, I've read many Red posts and ideas on the topic, and the reason Riot gave for not allowing you to switch between the new HUD and the old one was that they would have to update both constantly, and therefore it would be double the work. However, I would be willing to sacrifice new content for the old HUD, because I find the new one almost unplayable. People will say it just gets some taking used to, but I don't want to have to get used to it, I STILL wasn't accustomed to the previous changes (where they moved buffs) by the time they reverted them. The community almost simultaneously agrees that the new HUD looks cool, but is completely impractical, which is what it was made for (to be more practical than the old HUD). I surveyed my past 6 games, and found that ~60% (32 people) disliked the new HUD. They stated that it felt clunky and would take a lot of getting used to. You know what they say, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it."
