Your Friendly not so Support Main

Hey, I'm BigfootnamedYeti Or just Yeti. I play a lot of champs or at least i try to in my top three are bard Leona and Elise. I like playing support but i really used to enjoy jungle though i've come to realize that i don't care too much for jungling anymore because i don't find fun and i don't find any moment gratifying in any way. SO support has become my favorite or when my girlfriend and i play together she plays support and i'll adc, but point being i like support.

I just watched Gbay99's video on why people don't like support and while i agree there is a lack of outward gratuity from teammates or the game in general , i have to say there's no role that has more self gratification than support. When you turn a fight with leona or saving your team from a jhin ult from the most clutch wave. There is no reason for me than that to play support. I treat league just as much as a sport as i treat Soccer (futbol), Football or baseball i'll drink when i watch it and i'll cheer when i see some great shit. Thats all i need to play support i dont care that my draven thinks hes Tyler1 and can act like him or that my midlaner thinks he is god tier Faker Bjergsen Peke chimaera or that i can't hear my top laner because he is miles away from my lane or that i haven't seen my jungler since i leashed for him 40 minutes ago. I'm a support main and i am proud.Leona

The trouble is, that's a hard sell to a lot of LoL players. Imagine self gratification as masturbation, and being complimented by an ally (or even opponent) is like sex. Masturbation can be fun and can make you feel good, and some people are just fine only having that. However, the vast majority of people want more than that; they won't be fulfilled until they engage is sex with someone else. Sure, a little self gratification can tide you over until you have sex again, but it's not a replacement for that interaction with others.

And people are free to think like that. It's not right to ask them to change and appreciate self gratification more any more than it is for them to ask you to change and like self gratification less. It's not fair to say "Well you know you did well that last teamfight and you should be happy with that" because that's exactly what doesn't make them happy. They like feedback from others.

And it doesn't even need to be feedback from other players, the announcer lady screaming about quadra-kills or even the end of game graphs can bring plenty of gratification. As long as somebody, or something, other than themselves is acknowledging their effort and contributions, that group of players is perfectly content.

The trouble is that, as a support, you're probably not getting the quadra-kills and there's no end of game stats for things like "Plays Made" or "Allies Saved" or "Damage Shielded". If you do really well as support, there's not a lot of outside feedback acknowledging your efforts other than the mastery system. Even the mastery system has it's shortcomings, as it has different standards for support than it does for other roles; giving support ranks a lesser perception. Grabbing an S rank as Sona support is often seen as less impressive than getting an S rank as Sona jungle or top or mid. It's not a fair perception, but public opinion is rarely fair. Or logical.

In the end, support mains are free to like the current support role just as non support mains are free to not like the current support role. However, the issues arise when the amount of support mains (and even non support mains) that like the role at it currently stands is small enough to majorly screw with queue times. Riot has tried to remedy that with auto-fill, but many players feel that's an imperfect and temporary solution at best. Something's gotta give.

I also main support and get satisfaction from providing for the team. I always played support classes like healers in other games like MMO's and league is no different.

I remember one instance when my jungler and I (Braum) survived a teamfight at Dragon while the enemy Jhin was still alive somewhere in red side jungle. We were pretty low from the teamfight and tried to finish dragon when Jhin started his ult from the jungle. I'm sure you've guessed it by now, but Braum E denied a potential enemy ace and dragon. Didn't get praise from teammates but I didn't care lol

I don't think it's just 'muh KDA', but more that people just can't have fun when they're messing up so bad?

I play support main, and ADC as my secondary, (and when I want to when riot'll let me) a ridiculous amount of the supports you get literally sabotage botlane, at least to some degree. When you set yourself up for failure (and tilt your adc) things are always going to be fun. Sure it happens on the enemy team, too, but it doesn't get rid of those bad feelings.

I can wax lyrical about how much fun and praise I get when playing Leona and Thresh --- but that won't make it fun for other people if they don't understand the basics of laning as support.

I can only conclude that people that don't like to support don't believe that there is more happiness in giving than there is in receiving. In any case, a lot of the players that get stuck with or happen to play support for whatever reason don't seem to be excited about the idea of helping their teammates when compared to disrupting their opponents. Although you mentioned you like Bard who can be very helpful to teammates, you also mentioned Leona and she is very good at disruption. It's practically her middle name. Someone like Taric or Soraka though, they have much less disruption in their kits and are more about empowering their teammates than anything else. Of course, Leona still has her passive which gives her allies free damage.
