Support Maokai?

Yes, but it's hard. You have to rely on having an ADC that can follow up quickly after you get to a super close range
It can...but he is pretty weak early and can fall off really hard during mid and early late game if you can't get a lead. This is due to his high mana costs and the fact that he needs items to be tanky. Sure, he has good sustain but when going all in he lacks the defenses until he gets an item/ult. Compare to Leona who gets tanky stats for free with W and can dash in at a longer range with her E and you can see why she is a better choice. She also engages better with R and has more peel options in her kit over all. Maokai isn't the worst choice but his AoE -20% damage is better suited for someone that can really get dedicated to tank and build multiple tanky items. That said, if you can get to late/super late game and build all those tanky items he would turn into a fine pick.
