A replacement to Critical Strike items
Has anyone else gotten sick of an enemy AD Carry 3 shotting you because they've gotten 3 critical strikes in a row? Ever feel like you're useless as an AD Carry when your autoattacks don't critically strike and don't deal as much damage as you'd like? I certainly have. Some of the recent changes to League such as the removal of RNG in fear and the removal of dodging WAYYY long ago shifted the game to almost entirely skill, but... there's one thing remaining preventing this game from being the 100% skill game it is evolving to be. Critical strikes. I have a remedy for this, without completely removing the absurd scaling aspect of critical strikes. Now that I've probably bored you all with a wall of text, let's get to the point.
My new idea replacing critical strikes is a game mechanic called "Auto-attack Modification" (AM for short). This system takes the average damage over time granted by critical strikes and gives a percent damage modifier to ALL autoattacks (and other abilities that can critically strike). This removes the zero-counterplay characteristic of critical strikes and also makes it more consistent.
For example, having a 100% critical strike chance with 100 AD and 1.0 Attack Speed would lead to 200 DPS. To translate it into AM, having +100% AM with 100 AD and 1.0 Attack Speed also leads to 200 DPS. For this mechanic, it's as simple as taking the original critical strike chance and making that critical strike chance the "AM", up to a cap of +100% and not having AM affect turrets. Simple, right?
Now, for all of you about to ask, "What's happening with the Infinity Edge and Statikk Shiv then?" As for the Statikk Shiv, the passive damage would benefit from your current AM. This leads the item scaling a lot more consistently as opposed to the current state of it where it's all up to luck to decide if buying it for the cool shock effect was worth it.
As for the Infinity Edge, the solution is also pretty simple. The Unique Passive would be changed to as follows; "Any bonus Auto-attack Modification is increased by 50% of the said bonus." For example, having 100% bonus AM with Infinity Edge would lead to an effective +150% AM, which is the equivalent to having 100% critical strike chance with the Infinity Edge currently in terms of damage.
