Supports are Dying.

Hello whom it may concern,

Hi, i have been play league for awhile and have fallen in the support bracket. I love it. I love helping others have good games because it makes my experience that more enjoyable.

Now lately i have been seeing the mid lane champs being picked as supports and it frustrates me. Champs like Brand, Anivia, Annie, Lux, etc. I think this ruins it for actual supports like Janna, Nami, etc. They're too powerful. I am in bronze tier this season because i only choose to play support; or at least that's what i like to believe haha. I think main support champs are getting replaced in lower tier brackets. If the game goes even ok past 20 min, those mid lane champ supports just trade in their support items for their normal items and absolutely destroy the opposing team.

I understand that i could be bad, but i feel like there are other Main Supports that feel that same way. Is there any way to counter or maybe even get better at supporting? Online classes? I guess i am just speaking out of frustration haha.

with anivia support it tends to be a coin toss coming from another supp main because she goes oom quickly (unless you're running coin) she's great at zoning if you max her w first but it can back fire alot and if you don't ban vayne then be prepared to be doomed by your own abilities

A quick gander at op.gg can disprove this easily. Janna is sitting at 52%, Nami 48%, while Annie is at a low 46%, Lux is lower at 44% (win rates plat+ ). Imo supports that don't itemize as a support can hinder their team significantly, the exception being Brand and Zyra (among others). The addition of items such as redemption, ardent censor, and items of the sort have been a large buff to "actual" supports.

I feel ya. brand is basically a 100% ban for me unless my team plans to pick him and is super high up on the pick list. I'm sick of hapless ADCs that wander into his W and take 1/3 of their HP in a single 'trade' at level 2. .-.

If we're being honest, you probably just need to practice. You can definitely climb out of Bronze as a traditional support. Even with backline utility supports your KDA's are pretty low, which means you are dying a lot when you shouldn't be; and that probably means you are not where you belong and are getting caught, or are simply moving into fights you never had a chance of winning.

Try to play a little safer, and stop going for Rod of Ages; it's too expensive and you need earlier power to help your team. I recommend a Locket as an all-purpose support buy. If you are hurting for mana there's always Frozen Heart (but only if you also need defense against auto attackers) and a lot of the utility items have mana regen.

You often forget to swap your trinket to a Sweeping Lens when you get your Sightstone, or forget to upgrade it to an Oracle's at 9. Make sure you're using lots of wards from that Sightstone too!

You seem to value Abyssal Mask fairly high too. That's better on a front line tank because you'll be able to apply that passive to the enemy team; with a backline support you'll usually be out of range for it to do anything, so that's wasted gold.

You don't have to just read what I'm saying though. Check out what the pros are doing in their matches, and high elo streamers on Twitch. Read some guides from sites like mobafire to get a general idea how people build and play.

I just spam Taric and bonk them to death with my mace. Filling mage supports don't seem to understand how to deal with that usually, they expect you to run in circles and hide all lane.
