Why are supports allowed to get high damage items

Supports are here to help you get kills and make plays, and now when we have items that increase shield and heal power they don't need to buy item 3089 to increase their power(or any other). You can go Karma Lux or Veigar "support" with item 3089 item 3285 and 300+ ap and "help" your team with your damage and go 10/0/2.(death is the best CC) Then if you have all lanes with damage dealers you have 5 of them while the other team has 4 and a support. To me it seems unfair, it might give your team a win but to me it seems unsportsmanlike. What do you think?

I bet you think supports are the only ones who should buy wards as well :^)

As a Support main, I find your lack of faith disturbing.

You ask why we build damage items as supports?

Well let me ask you two questions:

  1. Why do mid and top laners build support items?

  2. If you let a support go 10/0/2, wouldn't that reflect more on how the enemy and your adc did and not on the fact they went full AP?

This depends on how you choose to spend your gold and what value you have as a support. For example building one of the most expensive items like 'rabadons death cap' is general not something you'll do unless you're really ahead and insanely fed as a support.

Those strong AP items, well they bolster our heals, shields, other buffs, and enfeebles...

So um, yeah... make us weaker than we already are...

Um no, that's supporting, not support. Support's primary role is vision coverage and vision denial. Secondary would be peeling. After that minor things such as lane harass&babysitting adc, wombo combo to make plays, roaming, etc come in.

'4 and a support' ... ur really underestimating other supports. If you lost to a veigar support which isn't even good, and he goes 10/0/2, you lost the game not because veigar does damage. If you gave 10 kills because of a Leona support you'll be complaining instead by how you were bursted down the entire time you were CC locked so you couldn't do anything, and how they can tower dive you when you're full hp. Supports shouldn't have that much CC and tankiness?? Or maybe it's because they were so much more ahead after several misplays. Now it's irrecoverable, unless they literally kill themselves and feed.

I had an Alistar(tank) game where they literally could not even stay in lane. They would be full health. If they get close I would do my W - Q combo. My adc Jinx just follows up with the chompers. She would place it right under them so after the knockup, they immediately get rooted. She would keep attacking. They would be dead. They would be below 20% HP before they no longer had any CC on them. That's just called having a lead and knowing how to use it. Now I wish I recorded it somehow just so I can show you.

Supports were originally created as a meta role to babysit the most vunerable yet also extremely valuable role, the adc, while they got through their farming stage without either getting themselves stomped in lane or murdered by not ADC characters that had better powerspikes and early kill potential. Basically a fall guy meant to have to take duo lane XP and no gold to give opportunities to the rest of their team while playing bodyguard for the weak item reliant marksman.

Now that those dark days are over and riot properly refined the support roles through items tuned for them as well as alot of passive gold gain, it's only fair that they are capable of being able to do more than just play the role of the unleveled no gold fall guy.

Sometimes extra damage is what a team comp needs. Supports are there to enhance the team or round it out. Usually to cover the weaknesses of one or more of the other champs, adc usually. And some team comps have a lot of cc and little damage so maybe a full damage lux can help it out. I'm not saying it's the best strat but it works and it helps non support mains play the role. It's not the most effective especially if they're bad then you're gonna lose compared to an actual support who just needs to peel and survive.
