Quick Void Staff Question

Void staff use to ignore 35% of Magic Resistance. Meaning that if they have 100 MR they will effectively have 65 MR vs a user that has void staff.

But now void staff is +35% Magic Penetration. So if I understand correctly, this means that having void staff makes you have 135% your Magic Penetration. For example if your only Magic Pen is from Sorcerer's Shoes (+15 magic pen) you will have 15+5.25 for a total of 20.25 magic pen. Meaning it's passive is useless on APCs that have no magic pen.

Is this how void staff works? Is it considered a buff or nerf from the old ignore 35%? I have several champs that I play which I build magic pen over ap which is why i ask when to use this item.

It ignores 35% of their magic resist calculated AFTER reductions and BEFORE flat pen.

The order of magic penetration is as follows:

  1. Magic reduction, flat.
  2. Magic reduction, percentage.
  3. Magic penetration, percentage.
  4. Magic penetration, flat.

It works the same as it ever did. Unique Passives are always formatted like that, it's just a little bit unclear in percentage cases like this. Haunting Guise says "+15 Magic Penetration", which literally just means "This gives 15 MPen". Void Staff saying "+35% Magic Penetration" doesn't mean it increases your magic pen by 35, it means it gives you 35 percentage pen.

If you look at your champion's stats in-game before and after you get Void Staff, you'll notice your flat pen number doesn't go up by 35%. The percentage pen stat just gets 35 in it.
