How do I counter garen?

Every time he just uses Q and I can't use my abilities. How do I outtrade him?

According to the circle jerking garen mains on the board you have to "get good".

They expect silver elo players to play perfectly or pay the price.

You don't counter Garen, you counter the player. Most are HAMy. Just don't let him kill you. Play like a giant bitch. Take item 3301 as your starter item and pick up whatever gold you can. Remember that if he's not getting kills, it's not so easy for him to snowball like he typically does.

In top lane, sometimes starving the enemy is winning.

I... don't think this is good advice. Garen is a pretty nicely scaling champion, so if he wins lane, even if just with a cs advantage, he'll probably outscale you. Garen's win rate by game length climbs until 40 minutes, so he's not as easy to outscale as you imagine.

Additionally, why start coin? Are you imagining being unable to CS you're getting bullied so hard? Garen doesn't bully most meta top laners until level 6, and besides, starting coin rather than a more defensive item like doran's shield probably makes you more vulnerable, not less.

i just noticed, you are a low level so yes i understand garen is a nightmare but the more you play the more you learn if not just do it in your mind read the abilities and try to imagine situations and champs that might beat him dont worry about it sooner or later you will be able to beat him with the champs you have mastered

so you want him not to be able to win even when he already got past your kiting somehow?

getting in your face is his win condition. at that point it should be difficult to fight him directly. hes not different than darius or udyr in that regard.

your goal is to not let that happen in the first place, or only when hes low enough on health that you know you can all in him and win.

do you want to know a "secret" about that that cc reduction on garens w? it comes with a 24 second cooldown. im pretty sure most non ultimate ccs in this game come a lot faster off cooldown than 24 seconds.

ill give you 3 champions with spamable slows. ekko can be played top lane into him. look up the rest yourself.

i wonder if you even thought about it before you asked that question.

and i wonder if you ever considered using a slow after garen pressed his q and not before.

there is also Chogath DrMundo Gnar Illaoi Malphite Maokai Ornn Trundle
yes i know some of them lose against garen after some items but REMEMBER IS NOT A MATTER OF WINNING LANE IS ABOUT WINNING THE GAME

It's still possible, you just have to stay out of his range while attacking him with RANGED weapons.

I don't know if this works in higher elo since it's not a tank. But I just DOMINATED against a top garen with ashe. Which has slows every AUTO. And you can kite and poke the crap out of him. I just got early armor pen against him in lane. A mortal reminder for the health he gets for late game.

play a champion with as much sustain as him or a champ with no mana cost Kled or Camille or Illaoi or Maokai or Darius or Renekton and learn to trade against him when he q you run then trade while he e's take summoner 14 against him and get good too learn to use the champs against him and look for the windows to trade

even if you do go those champs you need to learn them first doesnt matter if the champ is a counter at the end skill applies too

Garen is a stat check champion, so the best way to counter Garen is to either play a champion that counters him (strong anti-physical damage, high range, high peel, etc.) or just shut him down so he doesn't have any good stats to use against you since he doesn't have the gold to buy said stats. Asking your jungle for assistance or simply not providing him any kills in the laning phase can help shut him down. You might say this sounds like surrendering the lane, and, technically, it kind of is, but as long as you don't just let him rampage and get multiple towers in Top, you CAN use the laning phase to roam and make sure another champion on your team can out-stat him later in the game so they can kill him.

Basically, here are your options simplified down:

Counter Garen in champion select (or just pick an "OP" champion that transcends normal balance discussion, of course)
Get the Jungler to camp him so he falls behind in gold
Sacrifice your lane to a degree to boost another lane so they can have higher stats than Garen later on (make sure he doesn't rampage in Top and get all the turrets though)

If you don't do #1, I would recommend #2 if you are a "damage focused" champion that revolves around snowballing to be useful at all. I would recommend #3 if you are a champion that has abilities in their kit that allow you to have a minimum effect on the game like strong crowd control abilities or strong buffs/shields/heals to put on allies.

P.S. If you are the Villain, unless you are extremely ahead, just try to avoid dueling Garen all together and rely on allies to help deal with him. If an ally is the Villain, recognize the previous statement is still true and you are one of the allies they are relying on to help them. Garen can destroy teams with poor teamwork pretty hard.

all to do to counter garen is to win the early game and play near the turrent. Bait out his q and then go in on him in the early game before he snowballs his health in the late game. Like angry burrito said just think through the situations you will be put up against when fighting garen.

I play Garen a decent amount. I'm lower elo but will tell you what gives me trouble when I play him. Champions that have the ability to continually stop his passive. This can either be ranged champions or champions with ranged abilities on lower CDs. Bait out his Q. HIs wave clear is bad early, so remember that. Let him push lane because he isn't that hard of a gank (even with Q). Do not stay in lane with low HP after 6. Even if you're around tower. His tower dive is easy kill post 6. It's better to lose the 4 cs than to die to him. Garen is hard to carry with if not ahead as he is a very stat heavy champion. I've found playing against AD tops is harder because when you're AP, I can rush spirit visage for not only the stats but the passive healing bonus. Champs that can out sustain him are good too.
