Riot does not understand their game anymore

FSRER··88 votes·19,048 views

I was doing some research in the history of league in my spare time and I came across a very interesting article created by Riot back in 2017 which was for whoever wanted to join them. Source https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/quick-note-people-whod-like-join-riot-games-our-gaming-pommeraud

Quote:

The players who like our game spend a lot of time playing. They have high expectations and quality standards, because gaming is their passion and an important piece of their life. They can tell when a feature has been designed by someone who does not understand his product, and they would not like it. Building products that are the passion of other people is not like building a commodity. You can translate this idea to people who have a passion for movies. Do you think they would pay 15$ to go to a theater to watch a movie made by a director who does not like films? Probably not. So NO, you don't need to be a LoL player, but we are looking for people with an affinity for MMOs, competitive shooters, or MOBAs in general, etc. Of course, we expect that you will have played LoL and have an educated opinion on it. Because it would be unprofessional otherwise. And unfortunately, it won't be an educated opinion if you have only played 30 minutes.

They can tell when a feature has been designed by someone who does not understand his product, and they would not like it

Well, that is League right now. We can tell and KNOW that not only you don't understand your only product but also don't care for it's playerbase. And thats actually true considering that they try to fool the playerbase by creating pointless events, event passes, skins and the gold crap skins, so that we don't notice the condition of this game and let me tell you that what once was the BEST MOBA now is just a meh game which will slowly die no matter what you try. Back to the title, they don't understand LoL anymore, heck now that I notice it, even the name does not fit the games lore anymore (you know, when they just deleted the summoners lore), they just want to make more money off it. Remember when Riot actually heard the community calling them out on balancing issues and they fixed them? Good days. Remember when they actually balanced the game more than just adding visual effects to make it look prettier? Old summoners rift did not look as good as this one but it had a backstory to it and we could forgive the "Field of Justice" looking not so great but the champions, the abilities, the LORE being balanced and interesting? Yeah, that was League! We have high expectations and quality standards but it seems than you don't anymore. I can't believe how you overlook ON PURPOSE, the game being at this state it is right now!

Riot, we loved you, we cared about you, we gave money to you for not cool looking skins, not for passes, not for anything, just because we loved this game. I just don't feel this love for the game anymore and I don't think im the only player that thinks this way. I open the gameplay boards every single day just to see "Nerf Riven" "Nerf Yasuo" "Nerf Vayne" over and over again. For us to repeat this, there has to be a reason and yet you respond by buffing champions like mundo or garen! nobody thought they were too weak or too strong! why will you not adress the big issues instead of trying to fool us?!

Ok, I know I started to repeat myself so let me end it by saying that; Riot, if you want your game to not die, start hearing to the players like you used to and if you don't want to, just play your game, this meta you have forced and you will see what is wrong in a single match cause right now, from the 3 pillars that holds a game alive (story, art, gameplay) you unfortunately have only the art one still holding.

Thanks to everyone that took the time to read this.

"You either die a hero, or prioritize LCS long enough to become the villian."

You aren't alone in feeling this way. I used to buy RP to support Riot and the artists who create new skins/splashes, but I haven't dumped a single dollar into league in over a year now. Quite honestly I used to feel guilty that this game was free, but at this point I almost feel like Rito should be paying me to continue playing, lol. It's sad to see something that you've loved and enjoyed for so long become such a empty husk of what it was before but unfortunately that's just what happens when something grows too big and large amounts of money get involved. League has been around a long time now and there's just no going back to the glory days. Sometimes you just gotta hang up that highschool letterman's jacket, accept the death of what once was great, and come to terms that it's time to move on to something new.

Words of wisdom there. I, too, have stopped buying skins n' shit from Riot for at least 2 years now. People don't know this, but you can actually vote with your wallet. Mind blowing, right? Yet, many are ignorant about it and throw money, hundreds of bucks for a measly "prestige" edition skin, for overpriced emotes, etc etc... Man, I'm done purchasing even a penny worth of LoL's merch if they don't get their heads out of their a**es and fix their game. Which, like you said, when large amounts of money are involved, that is highly unlikely to happen. LoL went downhill since Tencent acquired 100% of Riot - change my mind.. wait, no, actually you can't change my mind on that. /rant

Just to point that one out. The funny thing is, he even said that their are players who are good at the game, can prove to be dreadful when it comes to designing the game.

Sure you don't need to be faker to design the game, but you need to play anyway to at least understand it. Understanding =/= you can play well.

garen and mundo were objectively too weak. they needed buffs. personally, i would have preferred an update on the scale of what they gave urgot and yorick not too long ago, but theyd still have ended up as buffs either way because the champions are too weak.

vayne, and riven definitely need nerfs. riven probably less than vayne.

yasuo is perfectly fine atm. hes got a high play rate around 10% but a 48% win rate. so many people are playing him, but not everyone is doing good with him, which is reasonable.

and then what? his ganks are ass, so whats the point of jungling him?

how is he going to secure kills? walk in and chuck cleavers into your direction? its not even like olaf where lvl 6 he can press r and run you down because he cant get kited, and his axes have a larger hitbox.

With his massive early game damage and disgustingly fast clears. Mundo Jungle is all but immune to counterjungles, if you try to fight him level ~4 or so, and they have any idea what theyre doing, you'll pretty much lose. And sure, his cleavers are missable, but it's not like a proper gank is coming from someone walking from his team's direction. Mundo pops up when you're not looking, or behind you while youre pushing in the waves too far, and if a single cleaver hits you, he's all but guaranteed a flash.

Cinderhulk buffs are going to send him + Shyvana to absurdly fast clears, but theyre also buffing Rammus with it. A champion who, mind you, is already topping jungle charts and saw pro play a few times this week (including once as a support against Kaisa+Leona, apparently.)

The Gameplay Boards have never understood the game aswell and here we are

Riot actually tries and hires people that play league and you have to prove you play league to work for them. So Riot is full of people that are like board's users. Super biased so they balance like shit, just like boards would do. No consensus because of biases, which is why it takes forever for things to change (just like boards - say "damage is too high" but if you actually talk about nerfing the problems they will cry, instead just stick to saying buzzwords with no real depth to get upvotes)

Just because the playerbase is so hooked into the game they don't care if it sucks. If League released today on the current state it would be a failure.

mack91127 votes

If something has existed for a decade then it is definitely doing something right.

Why would league be a failure if released today that makes no sense the reality is that many of the people who complain about the game are the individuals who have overplayed the game to a point where they have experienced every possible situation in the game so they feel the game is hollow to them that is why league has a remained extremely popular for so long it is always fresh.

League WAS a good game.

Riot has made the mistake of catering to individual tastes instead of favoring what is good for the game overall. Metas should focus on champs. The game should perpetually be balanced around risk v reward and phases of a match.

funkdubious24 votes

Best comment on here.

I believe Riot is too busy focusing on "nerf kayle" or "buff mundo" to see the bigger picture: some of the champs are just so over the top buffed that they miss the fact that these buffed champs can dive into a tower take 5 hits and laugh. The point of the towers was supposed to be a relatively protected space to hold the line. Most of the champs now ignore the damage and dive in, getting 2 or even 3 champs trying to defend a tower, taking tower hits the entire time, plus the champ damage and shake it off. There's something wrong there. Items that produce a champ that powerful breaks the game.

They are missing the need to create relative balance, like random attack crit roll that is better if your team is up against the wall. or tower damage isnt a set number, but 35% of your healthj... you can take 2 hits but you absolutely cannot take a 3rd, so decide to dive in carefully, it might just be a trade instead of 3 ez kills.

Ive only played free so far, I like the game, but I play it and i'm sitting here sometimes like WTF? AAtrox has a base skill resurrection??? Yasuo has a 5 sec invincibility??? That's stupid, and creates situations where you engineer a quick strategy to pen somebody in, and they just casually walk out of it, invincible, and laugh in your face. That's called god mode, and anything like it needs to be removed post haste. Its simply unfair.

A gaurdian item is different, you have to buy it, weighing the cost against other things you might need.

Anyways I'm new and maining as Kayle right now. I'm finding the frustration of playing Kayle especially illustrative of the sad state of the game. Shes completely useless until mid-late game, where all the sudden, the enemy team now has to respect her dps when they havent the entire time, and hate that shes now able to deliver a wallop.

JackMcSnipeyz5 votes

You can go back in time to every single day of every past season and you'd see a "nerf X!".

Remember when Kass was 98% banrate? When Talon and LB had silences? AP yi? League of cleavers? League of thunderlord? Release yorick? Gutted yorick? Release Darius?

Someone will always be top dog, you will never reach 50% winrate on all champs, and even if you do, people will complain about pickrate, counters, "toxic kits", "overloaded kits", "stat checkers".

You do know Yasuo is LITERALLY 48% winrare in both midlane and toplane, right?

Riot isnt doesnt have a perfect patch record, but i thank every day when i play league that the playerbase doesnt call the shots.

Can league be worse? absolutely. Can league be better? absolutely, But I still like league, but I'm gonna add some more unpopular opinions while I'm at it

Runes should have been completely removed from the game ages ago Summoner spells should have been removed ages ago (they don't even work with the current lore anyway) Every champion should use mana as their resource And lastly

League of legends was never a great game but just happen to exist in an era where you either payed to play "dota" (heroes of newerth) or you played dota with warcraft 3, you had to buy either HoN or warcraft 3, or you could just download league for free.

I still like league and it seems to be "controversial" to do so.

i'm going to blame Steve Feak for leaving Riot. I think it's obvious that he's not a part of the team any more. Same with Pendragon.

We need the original creators of LoL to be at the head of the team for it to be successful, without them, the whole project can potentially become a mess.

It's not enough to just have him on call, the people that were there from the beginning ALWAYS need to be at the head of its design.

The person who created LoL is not at Riot anymore.

This is a problem. Everyone knows this.

I stopped playing league all together months ago ever since the damage creep got too much for me to bare and them butchering two of my favorite champs to the point of uselessness (TahmKench and Nautilus) they repeated said they only care about Asian markets and made it abundantly clear that they only care about skin sales. Ranked roles was a joke and thankfully had enough brain cells left to realize it was garbage instead of trying to keep that abomination on life support, that community tournament thing that was a buggy barely functional mess, and these item 3124 item 3161 godforsaken things still existing all the while a number of champs sit with a 50%+ win rate that they turn a blind eye to because they don't want to hurt their skin sales due to their popularity.

No one enjoys this .02 second burst meta except maybe assassin mains but even a good chunk of those are sick of it as well since if they don't pop off in the first 5-10 min then the game is over in most cases now where a single person can loss you the game because they gave 1-2 kills in laning phase to the right champ.

If riot isn't r%%%%%ed, I'd them suicidal with how adamant they seem to want to piss everyone off with their useless and nonsensical buffs and nerfs to things that are no where close to addressing the problem. I stick around hoping one day they'll wake up and fix this dumpster fire but as it stands the trend of their patches is not telling me its going to improve anytime soon if ever.

Pro tip riot: lowering cool downs doesn't lower the damage creep you idjits

I resent this post both because I agree with it, but also understand why Riot hates its players.

I have said as much about Riot in more colorful words, and I always get down voted becasue I use "mean" language or because my match history sucks.

But the drones are happy to upvote THE SAME SENTIMENT as along as its worded in a way they approve and the user has a good match history.

Therefore, it makes the boards opinions meaningless. You guys don't even know what you believe. You cant even consistently identify with what you believe because, instead of caring about the message and agreeing on it or not based on its merit, you decide if you agree with it based on WHO is saying it and HOW they are saying it.

For once, I think I agree with Riot. The players are idiots.

Tencent has owned 93% of Rito since like S2

their marketing strategy also immediately changed when tencent bought themselves in though.

they started just pumping out champions on a two week basis, champions didnt get released for less than 6300 ip anymore, and ip gains were "adjusted" multiple times to noticably less gains. all just to increase the grind and get people to spend more money on the shortcut of just buying new champions with ip.

and a lot of those champions back then were just straight up better versions of existing champions instead of really new designs.

no one can tell me, tencent didnt immediately start to pull strings when they bought riot, and im pretty sure they have gained more and more influence over the company in the following years until today.

the usual way this happens is, they just filled the management positions at riot with their own people, and marketing people who then direct the developers. when this happens to a game company, the games just tend to become "how do we get the most money out of this" instead of "how do we make a good game".

i cant emphasize this enough. tencent is really really really bad for the gaming industry. theyre like a worse version of EA.

its also hard to track how big and influencial tencent is, because theyre using daughter companies like riot to buy themsleves into other emerging new indie studios as investors to get their foot into the door in case this studio is successful. from there they creep into that company the same way they did into riot.

if im not mistaken, they also own the epic games store and further try to monopolize the market by making games only available on their own platform through exclusives, whenever possible.
