This makes me wonder: Was Aatrox a normal person himself before, but he let that demonic thing that we know as Aatrox today consume him ?

the portrait can only be toggled at the fountain, has a cooldown and requires energy to activate.
the orbs are collected based on the form you are in and which enemies you kill. possibly based on whether an enemy is good or evil lore wise. it looks like orbs can only be collected while in base form.
once you gather enough red or blue orbs you can transform into a darkin or a shadow assassin. kayn is the human. rhaast is the darkin scythe. it appears that the only way to turn back into base form in order to revert is to die. both change your base abilities. the darkin seems to be more about controlling your opponent and the assassin seems to be more about swiftly attacking.
Jaspers1 votesSo, as Aatrox is the sword, who is/was the one wielding it right? The wielder has long been lost to Aatrox by now. Looking at the video above, Kayn is changed somewhat in the transformation (get horns like Aatrox) but doesn't gain wings or anything, so perhaps they were the wielder's to begin with. Maybe he was a Vastayan? Maybe one of the Tribes of the Sky/a bird like Vastayan.

Galiö1 votesHe and his sword are two different entities. In fountain you choose to control the darkin and gain certain effects or you become the darkin for others. You can prob choose which u become based on the orbs you have. Either you need orbs to transform or the different orbs buff each individual transforming. Like if you have a lot of kill your Deakin from red orbs is stronger or if you farm jungle all day you'll get more white orbs and your shadow assassin form will be stronger.
