Riot Makes Aatrox a god of war but he has little to no damage or tankiness.

Masked Pariah··75 votes·5,000 views

Aatrox feels so underwhelmed playing as a brusier, tank, or melee carry. Sure he can do them all but if you compare him to anyone in those roles he will be at the bottom of the list! I play Aatrox for his look and lore but I HATE how he is completely useless vs brusiersIrelia , tanksMalphite , and melee carrysFiora . Riot I ask of you to put him in a SET ROLE. You need to tweak him into 1 of the 3 choices he can be or else he just feels sad to play.

You could buff his ratios, change CD, apply more utility, or/and make his ult IMPACTFUL AND NOT STALE! I mean if in the lore he is a god of war and has changed the tide by fearing his enemies and encouraging his comrades to fight, then maybe should his ult do so?

I'D LOVE FOR RIOT TO ATLEAST TALK ABOUT THE PROBLEMS WITH AATROX, but they got other things to do like.... buffing Jayce .... when he was already decent and strong....

I agree with this sentiment. I absolutely love Aatrox as a champion, but he is so freakin weak atm! I think Riot is scared of buffing him, cause of his passive and insane life steal, I mean he was a mid tier jungle pick early last season with a slightly worse then average laning position, and cause of this they nerfed his jungling to sub par which in turn made his laning even worse! So yeah I think they're just scared of him becoming too strong and simply don't know what to do with him aside from a rework, which they won't do so soon after release cause it means they're admitting they screwed up. So until he becomes more popular or simply so unpopular that he's never played they'll prob just ignore him since they obviously have no clue on how to improve his clearly weak state.

EDIT: Also, I don't think Malph is as hard a counter as people seem to think. I have never lost lane to one as Aatrox cause I'm not dumb. He does his damage in bursts so Malph slowing his attack speed doesn't stop the harass and trading early game unless the Aatrox player is dumb and tries to keep fighting instead of settling for the damage he's already chunked. It's actually quite an easy match up for Aatrox.

I agree, but it annoys me how Riot is tweaking karma and jayce but wont even tweak aatrox. Also I feel that his "Insane lifesteal" is not insane as you think. Other champions can heal more and safer while outputting damage with sustain.Ahri Akali Cassiopeia Fiddlesticks Fiora Garen Irelia Nasus Shen Tryndamere Trundle Udyr Vladimir Volibear Warwick XinZhao . ALL CHAMPS HAVE BETTER SUSTAIN AND DAMAGE. I feel that aatrox W is only good when below 50% and you have Visage and Maw.

XinZhao is the only champion with a similar kit and on par with aatrox sustain but xin has more damage and cc that aatrox W wouldnt even matter in a duel if you put them at a = skill base.

Keep in mind Aatrox is one of my mains as well so I understand his healing mechanic and that it requires attacking people, I'm not oblivious to the basics of his kit.

But yeah it's not as much healing overall, but what I mean is that there aren't many champs who when ahead or just later in the game can sit in the middle of like 5 people just continually hitting people and never dying. Yes Voli's passive heals more and does so more easily, yes Garen can heal more in lane just by letting his passive activate, and so on. But if Aatrox gets ahead or is just buffed too much in general he will never die if he's allowed to hit anything, basically just because of his kits potential they can't buff him too much or in certain ways just cause of how imbalanced it would be.

And yes I have sat in the middle of 5 people continually life stealing later in the game. Only a J4 knockup as CC and they're one ignite was on CD. I killed J4 cause he was already low when he engaged on me and nearly killed the Kha'Zix beforehe jumped away and they killed me, but I was fighting 1v5 due to being caught out and just life stole enough to get the kill on the dumb J4. Aatrox has the POTENTIAL to heal an OP amount, it just requires so many factors to be just right and for your opponents to be dumb enough to allow it, so it very rarely ever happens, but if he were stronger and could force these kinds of situations we'd have a problem.

So yes I still think he needs some SERIOUS attention and needs to be buffed hardcore if not slightly reworked, all I'm saying is that if Riot isn't careful due to his "insane life steal" he will become a problem for the balance of the game, so they're simply scared to try anything.

His Healing doesnt scale when you put points into it. This is from the http://leagueoflegends.wikia.com/wiki/Aatrox/Strategy

It may seem appealing to maximize Blood Thirst first for additional sustain, however the amount healed only goes up by 10 base with each skill point (roughly 3.3 health per attack) Therefore, leveling Dark Flight second and Blood Thirst last is highly recommended. Also many champions have mana bars meaning they can build item 3110 and item 3143 that can really hurt aatrox. BADLY! Also with Aatrox's blood well it means he couldnt build Frozen Heart and that gives CD, ARMOR, and AS SLOW that any tanky duelist would want.

Something you could try is just maxing W for the damage aspect, it throws a LOT of people off because it does tons.

Yeah, as he is now he is pretty much a "ball of stats" champion which means if they get ahead like Olaf they are pretty much unstoppable. This is why they're worried about buffing him at all. Whenever Riot has a champ that cannot be buffed due to this nature they usually just straight up rework them. The problem is as people said, do we want him as a melee carry (which is what he is closest to right now), an initiating bruiser, or an actual drain tank. I myself would want him as an initiating bruiser, because as people have mentioned that his ult should be an aoe fear that can "change the tide of war" as in be an initiating ult like hecarims. We just can't give that kind of thing to him right now since he is more of a carry than anything.

one of the big things about this is that his healing rate is heavily attached to his attack speed, of which numberous items and champions reduce by substantial amounts in a way that cant be counteracted by other items, and that in addition to the attack speed slows the reduce his healing, we also have morellos, several champions that inflict reduced healing, and ignite.

moreover, for him to be the heal tank that riot wanted when they released him, he's going to need to have his healing, and healing methodology looked at, once every 3 works fine for Xin, where healing isnt his strenght but rather a small benefit, aatrox seems to need to get it on every hit, even at a half or third of its origonal value.

The only champion that can trade damage with sustain at Aatrox's level is Vladimir. Eventualy he falls off, unlike all other examples that keep scaling. He's the only champion that can effectively trade based autoattacks and mitigate all damage taken, which is pretty frustrating to lane against and ends up forcing your enemies out of the lane. The problem is, every 3 attacks you get a massive heal that renders all damage from the enemy useless, and unless they are recourseless they HAVE to recall or stay under turret. NOBODY can keep up with his basic sustain. But after a while, his sustain does not scale anymore and become another tool to keep him alive, the problem is that every single of the champions you mentioned do it better than he does after 25 minutes. If he's jungling it doesn't really matter, but top lane he just can't be dealt with. His sustain in the jungle gets outclassed by all your examples after 15 minutes into the game, and some of them offer even more than he does without the need to scale that much.

3 hungering strikes will empty your mana bar, leaving you with nothing to do. Aatrox will out-trade you without wasting any resources for every 3 autoattacks, increased the lower he is on HP. To do that warwick has to keep autoattacking the same target to stack his passive, Aatrox doesn't. Aatrox heals immidiately without waiting for cooldowns, warwick can't.

WW should be able to outrade aatrox in the early game and potentially outscale him by actually being tankier and providing more help to the team with his w and ult.

Transgressor1 votes

The outscale is guaranteed, the outrading is guaranteed as well. After 20 minutes, Aatrox is no longer usefull in the game nor a threat to lane against. Warwick outscales 90% of the champion roster pretty hard anyways, the problem is that Aatrox has no early struggles at all, appart from kiting, compared to literaly all top laners in the game and OP's examples, if Warwick doesn't screw up his early he outscales everyone no matter who he laned against, and if he's jungle he doesn't have to worry anyways.

Then he needs a substantial remake.

One idea I saw for him was give him a resource, in this case something called Blood Tributes, that he gains whenever he kills a unit, most likely related to size (minion/monster, large monster, champion). All of his abilities instead cost Blood Tributes and his W instead of switch between the two, can activate both as a toggle at the cost of the tributes per attack.

His his ult in this rework has him instead charge up similar to Vi's Vault Breaker, he makes a team wide version of Trundle's Frozen Domain granting movement speed and attack damage, and depending on the time of channel and number of Blood Tributes increases the area, while generating Blood Tributes for himself as well the longer his stands on it.

A number of things can still be tweaked, but it seems to fit his theme a bit better and gives his a resource instead of his own health that can help balance him.

sounda pretty bad tbh. A resource relying on killing units would quickly fall of later when there is more action.

A real possibility, perhaps a way to passively generate them that scales with level or you only need to damage champions instead outright killing them.

At that point he might as well keep fury as a resource, but make him consume it.

Aatrox doesn't use Fury, he generates a Blood Well that gives him increased attack speed and more HP when he revives. He uses his own HP to cast spells like Morde.

It may be much better if he did use Fury, but Riot made a choice not to.

Yeah thats what I meant. If they switched him over to fury.

Messaiga3 votes

He definitely needs a rework. Riot fears buffing him would probably make him OP again due to the nature of his kit. This is because of a few play patterns.

  • In lane, most people just max E to poke and sustain with W while farming. This isn't very interactive. On the other side, against strong early game champions he can get all-inned and not be able to do much about it.
  • If he did win lane or got ahead early, he snowballs and it becomes very difficult to kill him because of his W. If he loses or goes even he falls flat.

He suffers from what every bruiser does. Balls of Stats. When his numbers aren't high enough, there are champions that completely outclass him (as is the case currently). If there is a reason to pick him over every other bruiser then he'll find his niche, but unfortunately this is a problem among nearly that whole class of champions.

Death by Kayn5 votes

What really, really, really bothers me about Aatrox is how far from his core identity. He's supposed to be this bathed in blood warrior who can turn the tide of battle. In early PBE, he had that, with the buffs that he could give his teammates. After a few PBE patches, the war monster that was sold to us as Aatorx was no more. What we have now is a champion that completely revolves around self-buffing, and creates a really binary playstyle. In my humble opinion, as a rather frequent Aatrox player, is that Riot needs to give Aatrox a complete kit rework. Number tweaks might put him back into viability, but won't remove the binary abomination that Aatrox has become. I would love to see him become a team buffing fighter, sorta like GP currently is with his E, but, of course with more team buffs. That's just my opinion though, and of course, what I see as core identity may be different for others.

my 2 cents:

-his passive doesn't give back enough health for the long channeled cd it is. -his kit demands all in's every time but 1 cc and he'll die instantly. -you can't build much defense on him without gimping his actual use, like a marksman building pure tank. -his w heal sucks unless he's below half health and takes away from his damage, basically a half assed version of xin's heal.

what I would suggest?

-better cc? -more base armor/mr? -ar/mr added to kit? -rework?

I don't get why his stats have to be so weak, sure he's got amazing sustain, but it's not like there's no way to play against him. His Q is insanely easy to interrupt and can be dodged, same with his E, his ult has a cast time, and you have years to prepare for him reviving. Hell his movement speed is so slow that you can pretty much just slowly walk away from him while he's attacking you and be fine.

Hey man, Jayce needed those buffs. I mean, he had a lower win-rate than Elise for a while. Don't get fooled by the numbers though, it's a nerf to his mid game, and a buff to his late game, keep in mind that it means he has to put more points for his abilities to do more damage. Ex: He has to rank up his E six times for it to do the same damage it did before with 5 ranks.

On the Aatrox side of things, yeah, he needs a buff.

They didn't say he won alot of wars...

Masked Pariah5 votes

Yes he did. Time to go to school!

Aatrox is a legendary warrior, one of only five that remain of an ancient race known as the Darkin. He wields his massive blade with grace and poise, slicing through legions in a style that is hypnotic to behold. With each foe felled, Aatrox's seemingly living blade drinks in their blood, empowering him and fueling his brutal, elegant campaign of slaughter.

The earliest tale of Aatrox is as old as recorded history. It tells of a war between two great factions remembered only as the Protectorate and the Magelords. Over time, the Magelords won a series of crushing victories, leaving them on the brink of obliterating their sworn enemy forever. On the day of their final confrontation, the Protectorate army found themselves outnumbered, exhausted, and poorly equipped**. They braced for inevitable defeat.**

Just when all hope seemed lost, Aatrox appeared among the ranks of the Protectorate. With but a few words, he urged the soldiers to fight to the last before throwing himself into battle. His presence inspired the desperate warriors. At first, they could only watch in awe as this unknown hero cleaved through their enemies, his body and blade moving in unison as if one being. Soon, the warriors found themselves imbued with a potent thirst for battle. They followed Aatrox into the fray, each fighting with the furious strength of ten until they had won a most unlikely victory.

Aatrox's presence has changed the course of some of the most important wars in history. Though these stories remember him as a savior in dark times, Aatrox's true legacy may be a world filled with conflict and strife.

So from just this we can tell that he:

  1. Changed the course of some of the MOST IMPORTANT WARS IN HISTORY
  2. He is a LEGENDARY warrior.
  3. He Slaughters people brutally
  4. Cleaved through waves of soldiers 5.The Protectorate's were going to lose due to outnumbered, exhausted, and poorly equipped. Aatrox fueled them with rage and helped them win.

Do you think it would be neat if Blades of Torment had it's CDR reduced by .5 per auto-attack against champions, up to 1 sec per auto attack in massacre? They are supposed to be blades of** torment** after all. It sure would help his pursuit game quite a lot. If it's a massacre should people really get away?

Also how's about actually giving him a passive beyond bloodwell that makes him stronger or faster near teammates that are close to death, kind of like Soraka but more for combat. After all, he is supposed to be a god of war that turns battles around when they feel most bleak. Perhaps he gets stronger instead when there are allies corpses within a global ult range.

I think these two bumps along with your considerations would put Aatrox into a place that's nice and competitive, but not broken. (Depending on the numbers.) If I were at Riot I'd be fiddling with him already on all four of these fronts.

badooga1 votes

This is my list of possible buffs: -Those two suggestions -Adding a blood shield on his Q based on how many enemies hit -Giving his ult the ability to shred armor based on how many enemies hit, and if it hits all 5 it reduces damage too -Increase his base health and/or HP scaling -Increase his ult healing -Increase E missile speed -Give his nearby allies some sort of buff -Decrease his Q cool down at early ranks -Increase the amount of damage healed by his passive and/or refresh his cooldowns after he comes out of his passive -Have his ult restore some health initially

Aatrox has a great theme and look, but his gameplay can be underwhelming. As a former Aatrox main, I can say now that he needs buffs.
