Direction of League Mobility Frustrating for Old Champions
I've been playing League since Beta... and there is no other time than now that i feel like League mobility creep is ruining the concept of this game. When mobility creep is too high, champions with skill shots feel very weak. Not because of the lack of skill, but because of the kit most new champions have. In today's game, i've been keeping an eye on the champions the opposing team picks. About 80% of the time, the champions that are picked have a blink, flash, teleport, gap closer, etc. built into their kit. Champions like this would include:
J4, Ahri, Zed, Rek'sai, Ezreal, Fizz, Kalista, Lee Sin, Leblanc, Nidalee, Nautilus, Riven... the list goes on-and-on.
There are quite a few older champs that are being punished more-and-more due to every champion released having mobility. Champions with this issue:
Cho'gath, Udyr, Ryze, Zilean, Urgot, Dr Mundo, Evelynn, Nocturne, Varus, Annie, Lux, Mordekaiser, Singed etc.
I blame this as poor development. Mobility should be circumstantial... there should be reasons to use it and not use it. A few good examples of when it is used correctly:
- Caitlyn: can only be used to jump over walls if she's perfectly positioned to do it. Does not help much if used in lane or misses her target.
- Xin Zhao: It's an all-in gap closer. He has to be certain he is diving for good purpose, because he likely won't get out after going in unsuccessfully.
- Thresh: Didn't land the snare, can't pull yourself to the target.
As a general rule of thumb right now... those champions that are listed in the highly mobile category are top champions (above 50% win rate). Those that do not have mobility on-demand... are generally below 50% win-rate.
This is terrible design. Especially for skill shot champions that try to hit a target with on-demand mobility. (good example is Cho-Gath vs Kalista). It's no longer about skill, but about which team has the best mobility with the correct strengths.
I challenge you Riot... to start making champions with circumstantial mobility... not on-demand mobility. On-demand mobility is a lazy solution that is causing this game to be worse off. Go back through your list of champions that have on-demand mobility and nerf the distance covered or apply a negative buff for using such a strong spell (ex. movement speed is reduced by 40% for 2 seconds after casting super awesome blink in kit). Nerfing and buffing other spells in the kit to make up for the mobility or lack-of is not the answer. That just means that another champion with a better kit and same mobility will be chosen in it's place.
