The Great Evelynn Debate

Rico Nasty··8 votes·3,272 views

This has been a thread I've wanted to make for a while, about everyone's favorite stealth assassin, Evelynn Evelynn . As it's been known, Evelynn has been a pretty iffy pick. Mediocre damage, no real power spike, meh ult. So what's the history behind this? Well, once upon a time, Evelynn was FotM. I'll admit, she deserved a few nerfs. But then came a rework - and then nerfs - and some more nerfs - and some more nerfs - until she became completely unreliable. But then, tank Evelynn happens with the introduction of item 3709 . She made a small comeback soon after. She fit in perfectly to the tank meta; but Riot kills the fun. Cinderhulk gets gutted, and tanks are out. Some time passes, with Evelynn back to the bottom as far as junglers go. And then, this little fucker item 3716 gets introduced to the game. Once again, Evelynn is viable! A fairly balanced champion. As usual, Riot bludgeons her to death with the nerf hammer, taking most of her Q damage way, making the mana costs higher. Then they give her this "compensation buff" with a tiny addition to the slow on her ult. As far as this goes, Evelynn has been praised as a good jungle pick sometimes. She has been picked fairly often in the lower elos. But some people still believe she is a very weak champion. Moving on to her design - Evelynn has quite possibly the most awkward design, splash art, and model in the game. She looks more like a blue smurf who got into prostitution and visits the wrong hairstylist than a sneaky, lethal assassin. Her model is weirdly proportioned and is in need of a few touch-ups. She also could use a new splash art. But some people do actually like this about her, and see it as her core identity. So, what are your opinions? Does she need buffs? A rework? A few love taps? Because it seems like Riot keeps neglecting her potential, both thematically and gameplay-wise. (Art is not mine!)

all we need is mandrake ward or just to add the functionality to green wards to make her balanced.

then she can get a strong base kit and the buffs she needs. the only frustrating thing about her is how close to impossible it is to ward your lane against her. it forces you to play passive throughout most of the laning phase just in case she could be around.

we dont even need wards to reveal her. just let green wards issue a ping on themselves when eve enters their vision area.

like 60% of her power budget is in her passive right now. thats why the rest of her kit remains shit. make this change and she can have stronger abilities.

As a long time Evelynn player, I would say that she needs a rework. Some of her abilities just aren't suitable to the current game design, as Evelynn is like an Assassin who doesn't know if she's ranged or melee. Or confused as to whether or not she's an assassin.

I think she should be reworked with either low-power but extremely spammable abilities as her whole kit (Including her E and ult, not just Q) or not so spammable but extremely bursty abilities as her kit.

Her current kit is pretty much the definition of feast or famine, when she's strong she's hella strong and makes the game hell (Until someone decides to buy pinks) and when she's weak she's utterly useless. More useless than a 0/10 ADC because the ADC can still splitpush.

I don't play with eve too much to really have a debate... I just don't want her ganking me.. x3

I will admit, she has good ganks.

Why do you think she has good ganks?

I get the surprise power she brings but early game she lacks damage and her only CC is in her ult.

  1. I like the slutty blue skined, big boobed, BSDM theme she's working. She's also a bit of a mystery in terms of lore. Riot can't take that away from her, it's who she is.
  2. Kit wise, she's a jack of all trades but is good at chasing. You can go AD, AP, or tank with her and get away with it.
  3. Gameplay wise, aside from chasing, she's a weak ganker early on and she needs to fill in the team's gap if she's jungling. Laning, you'll want to build her AP.

Overall, I think she needs a VU that's mostly focused on a new rig but looks pretty much the same as the current evelynn. Gameplay wise I think riot needs to work on her as a jack of all trades chaser with an initiation style ult.

This is my favorite one. I play her top; I love that I have the freedom to go multiple routes with her; tanky, assassin, tanky assassin, ap or ad (ap items are great on her with Q, but ad are also good). She is an absolute beast early top. I would hate it if they forced her into a single role/build because they think it's better for the game.

Her identity is that she jumps into and out of combat without ever fully engaging until you can get the kill. There's no one else like that. The only visual update she REALLY needs is that hair; make it floaty or something.

She needs a new passive, and for her stealth (since really she should retain it, it fits her character) should be on an active ability.

Her passive is broken, flat out broken for a jungler. And when she's good, she's too good. Which is why they're always so quick to nerf her abilities because nobody likes playing against a fed Evelynn.

That's the first step.

Everything stems from her passive. The Rioters have yet to come up with an idea to replace what is thematically a large portions of Eve's identity and therefore until they do she will remain effectively neutered(or spayed in this case). It's a very sloppy "fix to her being OP" but they'll stand by it and you won't see any quick fix reworks. She'll get a full overhaul, likely changing a lot of things we actually like about her in order to alleviate the game-play tension her passive is causing.

I personally am a proud mid lane Eve player. Must have played close to a 900 games in mid lane alone. I'm for every champion having at least two roles they can be played in. With Evelynn however the truth of the matter is, Lane Eve was no different than Jungle Eve because she provided the exact same thing to the team no matter where she was, constant pressure whenever her passive was up. That thing she provided though was not an 'active' aspect of her game play, which in a way made her a bit (insert awful internet terminology) to the overall play experience for the enemy team. When she gets reworked I would like to see this changed somewhat. She should work to be an active threat rather than a passive nightmare scenario for unwary laner. I don't want to see her relegated into jungle and only the jungle like skarner, or 'heavily suggested' into singular roles through 'tweaks' like karma. I'm hoping for a fast, versatile champion who still feels like a stealthy huntress.

She deserves a rework AND a visual update. Her kit is beyond confused right now and for someone who in their lore is an assassin, she really shouldn't be a weird AP DPS bruiser thing.

honestly, I cry whenever my team has an eve. I hate 4v5s

Something as simple as making green/yellow wards count as champions would do it.

Then let Eve's Q target/reveal invisible units. Eve would still be able to sneak around and hunt wards, but at least you would know she's doing it.

This would open up a ton of kit power since you would know Eve is/was nearby at the very least. That would allow the rest of her kit to be buffed/remade into something a little less anemic.

HailFire Dragon1 votes

i think she needs both a visual and gameplay update.

but the gameplay doesnt need to be sion level...just......juggarnaut level. enough to properly give her an identity, a reason to pick her and counter play other than use more pink wards

Lugg1 votes

The problem with Eve is that her stealth is such a game breaking ability, that it takes up too much of her power allowance.

DrNova1 votes

I voted rework, even though I know Riot would just fuck her up

SaltyToplaneGoat1 votes

Rework her! Normal stealth is not going to cut it, so we need a special version of that:

I suggest turning her passive into a skill that literally lets her turn into a shadow and hush along terrain. She would be speed up and invunerable like this, but could not attack unless she left that state and it can only be accessed after a period without taking champion damage.

Now you have a unique stealth-mechanic that is more than just "lol I'ma invisible" with build in counterplay (stay away from walls).

Imagine the ganks with this. She would gank toplane - from the top wall. Now THAT'S a change :D

she needs some changes but i would really LOVE it if they made her Q toggleable, my fingers and keyboard would appreciate it..

I like Evelynn, I like her theme and the fact the she is some kind of evil dark elf-looking chick. I view her as a cheesy villain that breaks the forth wall (the heels quote, for example), similar do Deadpool.

Gameplay wise I've been playing her since the dawn of times (second half of 2011) and at this point I have learned to make peace with any nefs. I know I'll manage. I don't want reworks or buffs. I like what she is now and I don't want any big chances about her kit.

Evelynn needs a rework. Her entire kit is a mess, her stats are all over the place, she can't even go hybrid properly, she's just a big WTF type of champion.

You know shit has gone wrong when you have to play an assassin as a tank.

Rundus11 votes

Evelynn could do pretty well in a lot more cases with just a few tweaks. For instance, increase her base AD and have it scale worde (ultimately resulting in the same base ad at lv 18). This would help her early clear, which is pretty harsh. Another ok buff would be to increase her starting health and have the same thing happen with the scaling (or even just let her have a bit more later, as she could then have more diversity with whether or not she wanted to build glass cannon apc or ap bruiser type of champ. Ad bruiser would work better as well and tank eve would be fine too. I cold even see a hybrid build working (like item 3716 ->item 3146 ->item 3153 with a bit of tank).

Another possible area for buffs is her ult. It's a great initiation, but the damage is pitiful on targets that aren't full health, making assassinating lower-health enemies a bit more taxing. Change the %current health to a base amount or %max health and she'd probably do a good deal better, even going so far as being able to kill tanks if she plays her cards right (goes in, q ->aa ->e ->r all whilst q'ing a bunch). She'd be able to save her ult for fleeing targets in 1v1's or when allies win trades and eve ends up chasing down fleeing opponents.

That's just my two cents though. If I had to pick the most crucial buff, it'd be the base AD (or even more q damage) to help with the early clears without making tank eve too strong like the base health might.

I play her top and I think what most people don't understand is that her playstyle is someone who engages and disengages in combat multiple times. In laning, you are always positioning yourself to never fully engage unless you can kill them with E, but always be able to land you Q through a minion, which is pretty fun and has plenty of counterplay. You can build her tanky, ap (a lot of ap items synergize well with her Q) or ad. I usually get Hextech, then Deadman's Plate and Swift boots to make her someone who is a little tanky but can also deal damage while running around everywhere during a team fight. Engage with R, runaway when they waste time targeting you, then re-engage or find someone to pick off. She is a lot of fun to play and has plenty of counterplay; I hope they never remove her speed, potentially jack-of-all-trades playstyle that I love about her, since it's unique. No other champ is like that.

Random remake concept time!

Innate: Wards are now treated as champions for the purpose of her Innate, otherwise the same. Q: Now targets/reveals units Eve can't see, including stealth. W: Gains a new passive, spells shred armor, auto-attacks shred magic resist. E: Back to magic damage, keep the double OnHit proc. R: Now refreshes on kills and assists. Damage removed, instead Eve gains a mix of physical and magic damage OnHit for ten seconds. The physical damage scales with her bonus AD, the magic damage scales with her AP. Shield gained per champion hit goes down, shield gains a base value that scales on Eve's max HP.

There we go.

I think that would do a great job of allowing all the various types of Eve players to be happy. There's something in there to enhance for all three of her major builds (AD, AP, and Tanky). And most importantly, some hybrid shred to support her hybrid damage.

I'm shamelessly promoting thread about Evelynn rework idea I've made 2 hours ago: http://boards.na.leagueoflegends.com/en/c/gameplay-balance/y067fOnE-evelynn-rework-idea-wall-of-text

I'm so happy that at least handful of players remember old Evelynn before her rework and shitton of nerfs.

Honestly, just revert her rework entirely. give her a 45 second complete stealth, allow her to stun the first person she hits with a basic attack out of stealth for 2 seconds. let her ravage do 340 base damage and rend their armor/MR by 50 at max level, give her q a 0.4 CD like before and have it do less damage. and make her ult a resetting 40% movement speed increase and 60% attack speed increase (btw it resets on kill or assist)

I would love to get to play the old Eve again, even for a day.

The forum-tear would be sweet.
