I was just wondering what does riot do to people who afk in ranked games? It keeps happening and I feel like these people are never punished.

They do. Even better LeaverBuster flags them so if their name appears red in after game, you don't even need to report them :)
Riot doesn't do anything. Why do you think people still keep afk'ing in games? Riot CLAIMS they have a system implimented to deal with afk players. Yet, if what they say is true, we wouldn't have an afk player in every single game ranked blind or draft pick. Riot is lying.
leave buster gives people 15 strikes before punishment is given out. it has no teeth. i have people frequently go afk in games for 5 minutes or more mid game. pending the timing of the afk happening that means 2 towers go down and maybe an inhib. yet the player seems to go unpunished. riot has yet to show me how leave buster punishes player who afk for 5 or more minutes in said game. i want riot to posy how many strikes before a ban from ranked might occur. or hell any form of real punishment handed out by riot. in ranked players who go afk need to be prevented from playing ranked games for a period of time after they afk after each offense. give them the time to fix the pc or the modem so they wont go afk gain
I think your over-stepping saying that no punishment is sent ( I cannot back that with hard proof sadly), but I think you are right they should implement an immediate punishment for being flagged by leaverbuster even if its a cooldown before playing ranked. But I don't believe in harsh punishments for 1 time offences.
There the sweet and sour reality that people have been disconnected outside their control (i.e. on riots side) so yes the system is lenient but I know people personally who have been placed in low priority queue for leaving frequently and I'm sorry you've been placed with the same afker multiple times in a row, but I'm a firm believer in dodging if you know the match is unwinnable due to a certain player (your mmr isn't affected so you will win more next game). That being said I do wish a non-abuable system to root out such players before the game started existed but I don't anyone could come up with a system which exclude such abuse (you hear stories of high ranked player in challenger purposefully trolling game to ruin one player's score, so if a punish system existed in champ select these player could be targeted by it for no reason)
The most the automated LeaverBuster system will ever do about AFKers is a 20 minute low priority que. They won't ever get banned by it.
low priority 20 minute que is not a severe enough punishment. if that was there for 20 games then it might be. but bans from ranked for going afk in ranked games needs to happen. the 15 strikes comment i mader earlier was a sarcastic stab at how forgiving riot is all the time. the only way that the 20 minute que works is if they have to play 20 games with 0 connection issue. any break in that 20 game streak means they start back at 1 until they hit 20 consecutive games of not going afk
