Is Taliyah weak or just misplayed?

I know there are a lot of speculations and discussion around whether Taliyah is too weak or not. I want to share with you guys my thoughts about this issue. When I first started playing her, it was extremely frustrating and demoralizing. At first I thought so too that she is useless and weak. But after putting in some real effort to learn her, I now have over 65% winrate in rank with her. Here are few things you must know about Taliyah in order to use her correctly.

  1. Max e first then q - You might be surprised but e is actually her primary ability
  2. Do not spam q in lane - I always use 2 q in lane that is not on worked ground and just leave it that way. I then stand on worked ground to cs and poke with q. Your q gets half mana return on worked ground so you can cs comfortably and you won't be creating worked ground everywhere.
  3. E W combo is her primary lane winning poke - if you hit one combo, your opponent is basically half health
  4. She's not a burst/dueling mage! - This is important because you must understand your abilities are hard to hit and sometimes unreliable. This means don't dive or go all in for a kill unless you're 100% sure. Even if you hit your E W combo, don't try to jump in to get kill.
  5. She's a control mage - If she doesn't go in for kill then how does she get kill? By working with your jungler. You use your ult to wall of their escape and work with your jungler to get easy kills. R -> E W combo or vice versa
  6. Item path - This is what I think is the best item build path for her. She has damage problems because her damage is unreliable and this is why I think Rod of Ages is a bad item to get first because it makes her so much weaker early and mid game. She needs damage and some help with mana. This is why you start with dorans ring and on first back you buy another dorans ring and Aether Wisp -> Luden's Echo first -> boots of swiftness -> Ryali -> Liandry -> which ever ap item fits
  7. Don't go for back line in teamfight - You are not a burst mage so don't try to kill their back line. You are supposed to work with your adc or other squishes by spamming e to peel for them while hitting q and w
  8. R is amazing - Don't underestimate her r ability. Really learn how to cut off and split off your enemies and you will win games!

This is my take on how to play Taliyah. You might disagree with me but this is just my opinions.

She's misplayed by many.

It's so important to get Luden's echo as your first item. At first i listened to people that say rush rod of ages or even a tear... yes I actually tried to buy a tear first. It was so laughably bad with all the wrong build paths. If you check my match history, I won every single game when I started to rush Luden's Echo first.

Why do you take heal?

You're right man, she is an alternative type of mage most people are not used to, and honestly most people are not interested in. Anyone who says she's underpowered or simply not good just doesn't understand her dexterous and more methodical type gameplay and probobaly only plays champs with tons of damage and is only thinking about getting kills. Rather than controlling the battlefield and inevitably winning the game.

Misplayed, but can be very devastating in the right hands.

Though I'm assuming you have yet to see the horrors of a good one.

That's why I love jungling with Taliyah. item 1402 item 3116 item 3151 followed by pure tank items. The best part? She doesn't need boots in the Jungle.
