For those of you who don't know yet,Garen recently received a buff on the PBE.His Ult cooldown was decreased at lower ranks. This has been a request by Garen players for a while & we finally got it. My question is:Is this enough to improve the viability of Garen or does more need to be done?If more needs to be done, then what needs to be done?

Also @Riot,what took you so long to make this change? Was it his performance in the Chinese LOL Esports that pushed you guys to do it?

Or was it planned for a while now?

imo I don't think he really needs the buff, but I'm looking forward to winning even more easily with him.

I think his E needs a late game damage buff. The early damage is fine, but he needs more to go to late game

not sure about that. instead of the damage, his cooldowns could be cut a little bit more on higher ranks. like 1 sec on his q, and maybe 1 or 2 on his spin.

another problem he has, is that his ability cooldowns are balanced around stacking cdr. however ive found it increasingly difficult to work the stat into a well rounded build, with the item options he has available now. the cdr from randuins is gone. spirit visage lost 10% a while ago. that was a pretty big hit. and most other options like frozen heart are inefficient because of the mana attached to them.

and even with some spare gold, we cant buy blue pot for the extra 10% to hit the cdr cap anymore.

the thing is Garen being picked in competetive play is doomed to fail. Garen is one of those champions that the only way for pros to make him work is if something makes him stupid OP for a few weeks.

Garen in his current state is a solo que pick, and will probably never change.

I like this kind of thing on some champions though. But in order, they need to be decent to be picked in solo q. And garen is far away from this

Can we elaborate what makes him "Far away from this"? I mean, he has a Mundo ult as a passive, a ton of DPS and stick, one of the rare few champions still with a Silence. A damn good one at that.

As a Garen player, I say he's fine. The ult buff is gravy, though if it were up to me, I'd like Garen to get a reset on ult kill at Rank III. Same as Darius.

its a nice buff, to give him a little more power in lane again. after all these changes over the last years, he actually went from one of the strongest laners and early game duellists in the game to one of the weakest. (he used to beat darius on early levels. heck, he used to be able to 2 shot squishies at level 2 with a q + spin shortly after his release).

however, it still doesnt help his lategame. the buff to his passive was much better in that regard.

id like to see the self slow on his rank 5 spin removed. it was put there as a counterplay mechanic for his opponents during the early lane phase. the idea is, thats its not as easy for him to kite other melees through creeps, or chase them down with the spin, by pathing through the creepwave.

BUT. the problem with this mechanic is, that it still seriously screws him over later on in the game, in an area he already has problems. during the teamfight phase, scratch a random jungle monster, or during a fight somewhere in one of the lanes and just catch a creep at the outer edge of your spin, and people just walk out of it.

if they want to keep the mechanic to balance out his laning, fine. but it shoudlnt be hindering him late game anymore. so imo, the self slow has to go on the rank 5 spin.

with all those reworks, and changes they removed basically his only gimmick. which was his overpowered laning, to open him up for some buffs to his lategame. but it still feels like his lategame needs work. if you compare him with lategame trundle or jax right now, just in a straight damage race without even taking their mobility or utility into account, he still loses. put a 6 item jax/trundle in front of a 6 item garen and just have them auto attack through his spin, and theyll still win. i never understood how that makes sense.
