When to pick Tracker's Knife over the others?

I see it used alot more in proplay than the other enchants where vision if more important than a special smite.

In pro play it is because they take specific trinkets and stuff. Right now depending on your jg though if you go item 1412 item 3047 item 3147 You really can just go green or blue trinket.

Tracker's knife is just more slot efficient. No jungler really needs a colored smite, and it's better to save smites for potential objectives and stealing buffs in the first place.

When you expect the game to drag on long enough that all your slots will get full and you can no longer buy control wards, that's when you buy a tracker's knife.

It depends on who you are, If you play Lee sin and you need another trinket say item 3363 to keep an eye on your buffs and theirs, you can take tracker to keep your ward hops available. Also if you play Ivern, its a good idea to keep vision in the jungle since you don't offer a whole lot of ganking ability pre-6.

It really matters on your champ pick, champions with weaker ganks tend to take tracker to help out in other ways

In the casual play level that we are at, Tracker's is going to be most beneficial on champions that can already duel without item 3715 or lock down to get a confirmed kill without item 3706

The most obvious users are LeeSinJax , since they can not only chase easily and duel, but make use of the wards to hop to. But even characters besides these can chase and fight, and can find use in the extra vision. Some even pull more weight for their team by setting up CC than smiting a target.

Kindred Poppy Diana Ivern Zac Quinn Nautilus Malphite Amumu Sejuani

So, if you can duel and finish off opponents, or set up strong CC for your team, consider Tracker's Knife over the other smites.

Your list kind of leaves out things like Khazix NocturneShaco Fizz Talon Nidalee

That just outright burst / assassinate on ganks and can really take advantage of using trackers to ward the enemy jungle when they invade to steal camps or gank the enemy jungler.

They sort of are covered by the "can duel" category but not quite since the play pattern isn't generally extended fighting so much as it is just unload your kit and gtfo.

Generally speaking on those types of picks if your gank really needs chilling smite or skirmisher to be successful it probably wasn't the best gank in the first place.

Having a extra sight stone shouldn't be underestimated. Looking at it from a team gameplay perspective tracker's is overpowered. When it is used correctly you get so much extra vision on enemy rotations and jungler position.

It's a off meta pick that occasionally pops up like the fizz jungle. Not a common pick but it appears frequently enough to be considered viable.

The way I see it is trackers is usually always a good choice for your team. In my personal experience, smiting an enemy sometimes throws me off when I may need smite for something in the next bit of time. I make that mistake quite often, so trackers prevents that.

It also gives me the ability to ward key areas for my laners to help track the enemy jungler. In gold elo, having vision for your team is critical because we still play like monkeys. Refillable wards are literally a priceless mechanic that have won me many games. It also allows the jungler to rush oracles so you can help your support control vision.

Now you have 3 effective wards +1 control on your support and 2 +1 control on you. With 2 oracles and that many wards you can gain huge map control.
