Help with item builds

Hey there, I was wondering when to build an item that counters a champ and when to buy a core item. For example, someone told me to rush spirit visage against a kennen instead of me going black cleaver on garen.

When the matchup forces you to play different than standard. Whenever the matchup is bad.

If Kennen is just poking you out of lane then you're going to just want to farm up and survive, hence Spirit Visage is a good buy for doing that.

As a mage when you go against Zed you're going to want to take Exhuast and rush Seeker's.

Basically, any losing matchup you're going to want to build an item that counters a champion.

Also, always buy Executioner's Calling. Until the runes change and healing isn't so damn strong, anyway. (Or if by some miracle, there isn't a Yi, Yasuo, Garen, Illaoi, Trundle, Vayne, Quinn, OR Mundo on their team.)
