Yasuo Ult Mechanics

Sometimes when I ult with instead of placing me behind the target it places me to the side or from a distance. Being placed a distance when ulting can be especially useful when turret diving as it keeps me out of the turret range while I hold them airborne. Is there a way to do this on purpose or is it just a chance?
