Fun Fact: If you're tanky and you're up against an ap champ with low-damage high-freqency poke...
...yer screwed. Visage is only really good on champs with inbuilt sustain, banshee's blocks one spell every four years.
Pls halp

Buy it, sit on it, complete it after laning ends.
He sounds more upset by the fact that he doesn't get to take 0 damage instead of it just being the reduced amount of damage it currently is. Defensive items do help and will allow you to last longer in lane. The main reason it probably hurts still is because you either fed them or you aren't dodging their abilities.
Wow. That's the most bitter possible angle to take this.
My point is there is no IDEAL mr item for a tanky champ in these circumstances.
BV and SV do a decent enough job. If you're playing a champion that becomes a super tank, going one of these items makes it so that your opponent can't actually just abuse you and push you out of lane or at least it will take a LOT longer now so you don't have to base every two or three waves. The item allows you to endure in the lane, just not actually kill them unless your base stats actually do enough.
If you DID feed, though, getting this item helps, but they will have more gold overall and probably better items, so it feels like it does nothing, but that's a different problem.
Riot, by design, wants MR to be very situational as to when to aquire it, because if it is too easy to itemize against AP, then mages are useless.
Magic dmg is extremely CD reliant (excepting Kayle, Teemo, few others) and usually gated by mana or energy, so dmg mitigation is very very strong against it.
Attack dmg, conversely, is very easy to aquire and every single champion scales hard off AD items (AA are 1.0 AD scaling after all) and there is little to no cost for auto attacks.
