Off meta Picks and Champs that seem to have fallen off the map...

Let's start with the second point in the title....Champs that seem to have fallen from the meta.....

I have noticed that strong (to me) champs like J4, Urgot, and Maokai (don't knock the tree, he can still be strong) I never see in Norms any more. Is it because more ppl are starting to play assassins (like Akali) or bruisers (Fiora and Riven)? Or are they just thr victim of the current meta?

Now the first point...lately i've been seeing some "questionable" picks (i'm guilty of it too XD). For instance: 1 match had a Voli adc (worked quite well actually), another had Kayle adc, Kennen adc, and we had a Lux top in another.

My question is (2 parts): What is the line when it comes to off meta and just being a troll? And What are some Off Meta picks that you have tried or seen that surprised you by working? (Not looking at Taric jg, already know he works XD)

there is a fine line between off-meta and troll pick. off-meta is something that could work because something about that champion's kit in particular makes it so. for example, magic penetration/ap gnar. i don't consider this a troll pick because he basically does massive % maximum health truedamage to squishies, and because it's % maximum healthdamage he does really good damage to tanks as well. a troll pick is something that makes no sense for a champion to do and doesn't benefit or have any synergy with the champion at all. an example of this would be galio adc... it just makes no sense at all and doesn't compliment his kit at all.

Ruin Lance provides a good answer, so what I'll do is add on to his/her examples. Like, say, Braum top. It allows Braum to build for more self-oriented, expensive items. He trades well, if you're willing to all-in when you trade. Plus, he makes his lane very gankable due to his passive. The downsides to this, is that he has next to no wave clear until you build for it. Then there's stuff like Full AP Singed which has the potential to work, but it falls short in a lot of situations, unless the enemy is, quite frankly, stupid. AP oriented Singed, however, can be quite effective in many situations, like if you lack AP damage, and already have a tank.

You mean stupid enough to chase Singed....XD

Off-meta is if a champ is played in a role he is suited to play, but the meta (as in, we) won't let them be played there. Something like Kennen ADC or Zyra mid is definitely not a troll pick, but Voli ADC I'm not sure, of course it can work surprisingly well if you have a bruiser bot, but then I wouldn't say it's ADC Voli (that is, if he did not buy things like Rapid Firecannon and Infinity Edge).

And would you consider Renekton support or Mordekaiser support troll picks?
