To put it bluntly, your entire friends list and even the boards is still a small minority. The reality is, League is still in its prime, it still has tens of millions of users who are all enjoying it and spending money on it. While i'm sorry you and your friends don't enjoy it anymore, its important to keep in mind you do not speak for the entire community.
I didn't really mean that. I'm in LoL since only 2 seasons, I came from a different game, but I knew guys playing LoL long years before. I can't name more than two who still in the game or, actually, who were in the game when I installed finally. Since I play LoL, my friend list keeps on rotating, people 'dying out" while new players arrive. In my experiences the real long term players are a minority in LoL too, most guys just come for the poplarity then leave as soon as any other games - some stay for the fun, some stay for addiction and sunken cost fallacy.
I'm still here but yes, I'm afraid I'm about to leave too. But this wasn't the reason of my post and I won't make a long "by bye" post or anything :) I jut realised LoL isn't in my most played games anymore and I have about the same issues as the OP. Jumping from one unbalanced grindfest to the next isn't fun to me, prob. this is why I never got into MMOs.
Anyway, I didn't talk about what "me and my friends" experience right now but what I see all around about a rotating playerbase since long years.
You can list popular games yes. You can list beloved games as well. But you can't list any games that have reached the level of success of League, and sustained that success for over 7 years now. By any standard imaginable, League is an incredibly successful game. Evidently plenty of people do enjoy how it is run.
Nothing ever reached the global success of League but we both know that it comes from a lot of different factors beside the game itself. And I don't mean just marketing, timing and such. For example, compared to the actual gaming community, early 2000s arena shooters, like Quake3, was as much popular and they played it through long long years. Just the gaming community was much smaller.
But let's list things then:
If we don't count with LoL's 100 million Chinese players (what seriously distracts the statistics...), only the western playerbase, then both CS:GO and DotA are pretty close behind. Not just as an esport (as LoL not even the biggest esport) but as popular games.
CS:GO is basically the very same game as CS 1.6 was, with a new graphic engine, business model and a few patches here and there.
And DotA is basically the same as the old with new graphics and a really few changes plus some new heroes. (I know, my first DotA was v4.58, I'm old :) )
So, I already brought two games what are among the top esports and most popular games since a longer time than LoL and at the same time their basic gameplay didn't change much at all, except visual updates and balance patches.
But back to my original point: I didn't say LoL is a bad game, this thing is very subjective anyway. I just said that if your game is really a good one, you don't have to turn it upside down all the time to keep it interesting and challenging.
