An idea to give supports more options in their items builds
I was recently thinking about ap support items. I am a support main, so I use these a lot as Sona.
#A little background Currently AP support items are made to go into each other. Want extra AP from grail? Get ardent, redemption, and/or crucible. Want your redemption to not suck? Get ardent and/or crucible. Because I play as Sona, I am going to look for AP and a mana source. If I get behind, Athene’s seems to be a good choice, but then I have to buy the other support items. Not for the passive, but for the stats. If I don’t care for the passives when I buy an item, then it doesn’t really feel like i have a choice for support items.
#The Suggestion What if we were given a choice for the passive/trait in a support item? A support item could be bought for the stats it gives, minus a few, and the player could choose an enchant to give it a strong passive along with the rest of the needed stats.
#For Example I fell behind in lane, so I decide I have to use support items to keep up my stats. I get athene’s grail. If I really want to take advantage of the item’s Mana regen -> AP, then I need a support item.
Perhaps I choose ardent since it gives 60 AP on top of its regen, but no one on my team really benefits from the extra attack speed. Maybe I would rather have the cleanse from crucible instead. In the store, I would select an ardent censor and buy the item just without the attack speed buff and some lower stats. Then, when I have a little extra gold, I choose the passive I want through an enchant, giving the item it’s passive and the rest of the stats it was supposed to have. In this case I choose the cleanse to help teammates escape sometimes from my already fed enemy.
#Cool Options This could also allow the design team to add other cool support benefits. Maybe I think my champion’s ability to give my team shields every 5 seconds is already amazing and I just want extra healing and shielding off of a straight number instead of a percentage. Maybe I want a speed buff for my team when running away from the enemy. Maybe I want an active to stop a single attack to save my adc from that one last auto attack that would otherwise kill them.
This is just an idea I came up with since I am getting a little frustrated because it feels like I have a lack of options in my support build sometimes.
#But League has Done this Before! I know league has done enchants on boots before where the issue was people forgot to choose an enchant. However, I think this would be different. If the enchants are major enough, people would forget about the enchant less often. Riot could even potentially make the item slot glow or add some visual effect on it when it is missing an enchant or passive.
#Feedback? I would actually like to hear what someone thinks of this idea, or if I ripped off some other game without realizing it.
I just would really like to give a little more variety in support builds, but I could be thinking about this the wrong way entirely.
