What if the starting items for supports all had a stacking mechanic that other items would use...

What gives the stacks could be anything (but most likely something in relation to your lane partner), like every time he gets CS, or every time you heal or shield or buff a team mate, or anything that is an actual balanced way to do this. The stacks would be stored on the starter item but other items would grant extra stats in relation to those stacks, making for more gold efficient items.

That way you can have items in the game that are cheapish and give average stats for most but give great stats for the support class.

If you make these items be the in-between items for the other classes it won't affect them as they'll use them until they can upgrade those items to the end items, supports would keep the in-between items and the items would get stronger over time without extra gold input as long as you can get your stacks.

Does this sound like a good idea?

Something along the lines of "mejia's for supports"

Something like that would probably get complicated to implement. Not to mention that most supports are already balanced around not having items.

Though One of the things I wanted to see is a support with utility that scaled off Maximum Mana. Something that could really take a turn from a classic support build.

I would not call the current situation balanced, its just that supports (and junglers) make due with what they have because the game demands it of them. If we had properly divided equal resources for all 5 positions you could talk about proper balance between champions.

What we have is a group of champions that have to get a lot of utility and base power from their kit that falls of the longer the game lasts because they can't have proper scalings or they would be OP but also can't get decent items to make up for it.

I agree to a point, but Jungle and Support gold become impossible to balance around all ELOs. Because Lane gold is dependent on your CS. In the past, I have had complaints about my mage support having AP level gold. (Even though they themselves, don't even have AP level CS.) And I've noticed that Junglers and supports have a lot more impact in YoloQ games. (particularly at my ELO.)

by the way, Some Utility. (Particularly CC and catch potential.) Basically never fall off, are are good at all stages of the game. (and those would be the tank supports that are dominating now)
