@RIOT Using player metrics to match ranked players.
I'm curious if this is something that you already do or would it be possible to do. With the new letter grade system it's clear we have lots of metrics being measured each match. However when it comes to rank matching it seems the sole matching criteria is based off MMR alone. This isn't fair because player can and do frequently get carried to and held at ranks they don't belong. There are also a few other problems with the match making system which I want to touch on as well.
I've been using third party services like lolking and op.gg to check out players after matches. I've noticed one odd thing. The match making system consistently puts the bulk of players with negative or just flat out bad statistics on one team. I'm not talking about players who have had a bad game or two but players with consistently high deaths , low damage and bad stats all around.
The matches are unfair when the systems places 1 feeder on blue team then 3 feeders on red team. This is how it turns out in the overwhelming majority of games. Every game I play is win big or lose big. I can't say GG anymore because most games aren't good. They're a one sided stomp fest. I feel bad for the losing team most of the time because there are usually one or two good players on their team but they are being dragged down the other super poor performing players.
I'd be willing to wait much longer for matches if it meant a fair match up. The poor performing players should be matched with other poor performing player , mediocre with mediocre , good with good , etc. People will say that isn't fair because the poor performing players will be shot back down to bronze 5 but that's exactly the point. They belong there in the first place and should have never left.I'm not the best player I consider myself to be mediocre when compared to others but I shouldn't be matched with players who are consistently negative on every metric.
The way the system is now and the way it has always been is a real drag. Climbing ranked just isn't fun because it's more lucked based than skill based. Perhaps it's time to sit down and rethink the match making system.
P.S. Even if I where to remain at a 50% win rate I would at least like to have matches that are challenging. The game just aren't fun when "this is a slaughter".
