Update on Updated Spellblade VFX!

Hey everyone! I posted here a couple of weeks ago asking for feedback about updated Spellblade VFX that the Game Systems team was working on. We read through what you had to say and made some slight iterations that I'd like to share with you! The changes aren't too big - we primarily tried to address concerns over clarity by adding some white glow to the center of the VFX and brightened them a bit (The Iceborn Gauntlet screengrab doesn't convey this too great...my bad...). That said, we're particularly interested in what you guys think about the new differentiation between Sheen and Trinity Force.

We're feeling pretty good about moving forward with these, but would like to give you guys an opportunity to provide your thoughts. See them below!

I still don't get why;

red = trinity (yellow item) red = sheen (blue item) purple = lich (red item)

Blue for iceborn makes sense though.

I would've just made sheen a blue, with iceborn a white/snowflake like effect, trinity force as a yellow or gold, lich as the red. Frankly, a new player won't expect the color connections because they likely won't identify the "purple = magic, red = physical" much like with damage type shields, especially when there's already confusion (in tooltips, green = magic, but orange stays consistent with physical, I remember when I was level 10-15, thinking blue = magic cause of morg shield and building health (green) meant damage because health bars are green)).

You're more likely to see a new player connect an effect with an item's color.

Colorblindness could be an issue but I don't see how this doesn't have the same issue either.

Granted nobody notices these effects anyway.

Neat

Red, blue, and purple instead of R/B/G? Don't you people know anything about primary colors?

BTW, how does this look for people with color blindness?

Any update on when we will get an update for the update on the updated spellblade vfx?

This is so cool, I love seeing VFX getting modernized!!

Tho I think Lichbane could use something more magical, like triforce and those lil red particles disappearing from the core

Other than that, that looks nice!!

We miss you on the playtest Rob with both ThEntropist and Ender L moving off as well [zombie-nunu-tears]

Just wondering, but why is that Trinity and Sheen have the same VFX? Couldn't item 3078 have a yellowish shade on the VFX to differentiate better between those two?

Does not trinity force have almost the same visual as item 3504 ? Only difference is that slight red trace on moving target with ardent. If target with ardent isnt moving/aint moving fast enough/in desired direction then there is just no way of telling them apart.

They look nice! I can't really discriminate between the Sheen and Trinity effects well (just seems like one of the glows is a bit more orange?), but everything else looks a bit better than Live.

Would it be possible to make the colors for sheen/trinity/lb match up with the items a bit more, or would that affect readability? Do people currently associate the colors as red = physical, purple = magic, and blue = slow? Would it be worth remaking the items' icons to better reflect the particle colors instead of changing the particles?

Looks really cool! Hope it gets good colourblind support, will the impact effects (iceborn gauntlet zone, lichbane hit, etc) also change?

2Charmnot2Charm7/7/2018, 3:33:27 AM1 votes

looking good.

I think Lich Bane's effect would match to one similar like Zoe 's E effect when it hits a target

I think sheen/trinity force need more of a difference. I don't think you should shy away from the idea of adopting an entirely new color or revamping the color scheme in its entirety. Sure, it's not what people are used to but they will grow accustomed to it.

huh.

first time seeing this post.

i like the concept, but the colors blend. unfortunately there are only 9 distinct colors and 3 of those arent colorblind friendly. lame.

had i seen this sooner i would have recommended differentiating between the location and size of the glow

AtaxiChaos7/7/2018, 9:14:59 AM1 votes

The higher contrast is definitely better than the last set.

PraiseTheThresh mentioned that there are still some colorblind issues. Looking at the Trinity Force preview, it's possible that it could be clarified without reworking the colors too much by differentiating the particle effect for the "pulsing." As long as they have sufficiently distinct movement shapes, it could make up for the lack of color diversity. Say, for example, something like a swirling effect for Lich Bane and a squared ice-cube-ish effect for Iceborn Gauntlet

So Sheen and Trinity Force... The main difference is one is a slightly darker red. Can you make one of them yellow instead? Maybe Trinity? Or, ooh! Even golden! Yeah, make TF golden and we good.

Honestly. I like Tormentula's idea the most but it just seems like one of those things you guys wouldn't go for. Mostly because you guys never take player advice unless you can change it some way and make it yours.

But yeah let's not do 'slightly-darker-variations'.

Ultîma7/7/2018, 2:52:15 PM1 votes

Really neat! I think it might be helpful if Trinity specifically maybe had a few golden accents to it to tell it apart from Sheen at a glance. The extra particles are cool though!

ModThe Djinn7/7/2018, 4:08:40 PM1 votes

MUCH improved since the last version. Those little changes did a lot for readability, especially with Lichbane, which should now stand out in Cass/Singed poison better.

The Sheen/Trinity Force changes I'm a bit less excited about. The particles for Trinity Force are darkening the model a lot and really muddying it up and making the whole area look a bit darker, which I don't really like. The extra glowing/circling particles is great, but the dark shadowy ring around them I'm not sold on at all.

Sleepcoma7/7/2018, 5:11:51 PM1 votes

Looks good, but trinity force seems bit too big. Otherwise they're a nice upgrade over the old ones.

I have no way of knowing if I was responsible for bringing it up or not, but I am very happy that our feedback was implemented into the change on spellblade. Thanks for partially renewing my faith that feedback matters.

Mmmh... in my opinion you could use the glow color based on the item stats as you already did for Trinity Force and Lich Bane: Trinity = Red (Physical damage item), LB = Purple (Magic damage item) and IBG = Yellow (Armor item) but ye, I can understand that blue fits better for the ice theme of the item

DeathBurst7/7/2018, 1:04:53 AM1 votes

Honestly, i can hardly tell the difference between Sheen and Trinity, and I'm sure I won't be able in the middle of a heated game. But to be fair, I can't either with the current version.

Ghulra7/7/2018, 1:16:36 AM1 votes

Slightly red/green colorblind, but I can see the subtle difference in sheen and trinity if i focus. Would prefer if they all had unique colors, even if it doesn't totally match the damage type, just because itd be clearer. That said, I rarely notice the sheen proc in game in any capacity where I wouldn't already know they had a sheen item. Might never actually come up in game.
