@Meddler Context on Janna Nerfs?

PBE Change: Eye of the Storm (E) bonus AD reduced to 10/17.5/25/32.5/40 from 14/23/32/41/50

Can we get some information and context on this? This is a pretty heavy handed nerf to Janna. It already feels crappy maxing any other skill, especially since you massively increased the cooldown on Zephyr a few patches back.

If Janna needs changes, I'd much rather see her passive hit. It's offering way too much peel right now for basically just existing.

Just a straight power hit. We like Janna overall, she's over performing though and has been for a significant enough period of time. Also worth mentioning that in addition to the E nerf we're also reducing the duration the R stuns enemies as they're knocked back to 0.5s (from 0.75s). That removes a bit of power in a way that keeps the ult focused on its primary functions (getting people away/healing allies up, versus locking them down briefly during a fight).

Alistar Braum Morgana Thresh

Care to elaborate about those, who've constantly been ridiculously popular in competitive play for many seasons - even since release where Thresh is concerned? (whereas Janna has actually had long periods where she was MIA from the competitive scene)

SkyblazeHydraX35 votes

I imagine popular =/= overpowered. All of those champions have very clear identities (except for maybe Thresh, who's pretty versatile) and their kits really shine through.

Besides, Alistar is getting nerfs to his heal in the same patch Janna is getting these shield nerfs.

The fact that they are popular in competitive play, and have been for so long, is a testament to their strength. If they were not considered top tier, I doubt pro teams would bother with them, unless SOMEHOW every pro support player happens to main the same champions?

Janna has a clear identity just as much as Braum, and a very clearly defined role: stay close to the ADC, buff and protect him at all cost. I'd argue her identity is clearer than Morgana's (why does a support have spellvamp???), and clearer than Alistar's (why does a mega tank with super strong engage have an AoE heal???). Thresh is the poster child for jack of all trades and master of all. Poke? Yes. Peel? Yes. Hard engage? Yes. Ability that is strong enough to be on a ultimate being on a normal ability? Check.

Alistar should honestly be getting nerfs to his combo, he is insanely obnoxious now that they gave him the QoL fix that enables even a monkey to pull it off constantly. Instead of that they are nerfing his heal, which is pretty much just bonus on his kit. When you think about Alistar you think about the unkillable cow that pressed R before messing up your day with his CC and displacement, you don't think "oh yes, the healing cow!". Janna's shield is a define part of what she is meant to do as a champion; Alistar's heal is just icing on the tasty cake.

I agree certain parts of Alistar's kit are annoying. I don't like how much base AD he gets and his ult giving him even more, and I don't like how much damage he can do building just a bit of AP on top of his incredible CC.

But Alistar and Morgana both have the same reason for their awkwardness; they're oooooooooollllllld. Some of the oldest champions in the game in fact, with limited VO and awkward aspects to their kit as a result. But that same awkwardness gives them versatility that a loyal player base enjoys, and thus Riot is hesitant to remove out of respect and appreciation for that loyal player base.

Janna is just as old and her kit is a lot more cohesive. OFC, the spellvamp on Morgana makes sense when you consider that she was originally a mid laner.

If I recall correctly Janna actually got a gameplay update some time ago, along with Tryndamere and Kayle.

.....Yeah.

IcyPepper2 votes

I'd argue her identity is clearer than Morgana's (why does a support have spellvamp???)

To be fair, she was originally a midlaner. They're unlikely to remove her passive unless she gets a full rework, to allow players to play both support and carry roles with her. She's a flexible pick in some metas, after all, she's not a full-support like Soraka is.

Ok Janna has also seen regular spells of popularity in competitive, she is also performing better than any of the champions you named in solo que as well. Janna is straight up busted right now, and she is deserving getting a nerf. And it didn't even really affect her peel potential, you know the reason you are supposed to be picking her.

That was... my point exactly. That they're constantly taking away her tools to do anything but peel and be defensive.

Sona and Nami are supposed to be generalist supports, and neither perform as well as Janna in either Competitive or Solo Que. Let that sink in, a champ like Janna who is supposed to have a "clear identity" is a better generalist than actual generalist.

But she's not being picked as a generalist. She's being picked for her identity which is buffing an AD champion and making it very hard for enemies to reach and kill him. Her popularity is explained by the meta, when your team comp is 3 ADCs, a tank, and a support, Janna being said support is very attractive since she can strengthen and protect these ADCs, especially if the enemy team's answer to your comp is 2 assassins + a tank + an ADC + a tank support.

Being fast, and being extremely not dependent on levels to do her job, she is also very good in the current "supports roam a lot" meta.

The moment laning phase extend/poke supports rise in popularity/siege comps become the norm/any combination of the above, Janna will vanish. She is strong at what she does, and what she does is a strong asset right now. It's as simple as that.

She fits into any team comp except hard engage but she has to be picked against specific team comps/supports. The reason she's so popular is because there is only one type of support picked - melee hard engage. It's not Janna's fault that every mage support not designed to counter tanks is trash.

YCitizenSnipsY1 votes

She actually can work with a hard engage comp. Pair her with Kalista, have her throw you behind them and ult everyone into your team.

This is not a reliable form of engage and if you need to pair Janna with Kalista to make her a functional engager then first of all she is not working with every team comp, she's working with a very specific team comp, and second of all there is no advantage to an impractical Kali + Janna ult combo over a Kali + any tank ult combo.

YCitizenSnipsY1 votes

Its just a different version of a Janna flash ult combo, that doesn't require the flash. Plenty of Janna players will flash offensively to use their ult if they can. Just about any support can be turned into an engage support with Kalista. There was a competitive match this season that featured a Kali/Soraka combo.

That's the role she gets picked for the most atm (and it's been that way for quite some time now), whether you like it or not, whether she was designed for mid lane or not.

For that matter she is popular as a support for the same reason Janna is popular, she's a great "fuck you" to the tanky engage supports that are overly popular.

Not really. Just because a champ is strong in comp play DOES NOT MEAN they are good in regular play. Azir for instance was only really any good in comp play. Janna is crazy good in solo Q because of how brain dead easy she is. You can be the worst Janna in the world and still be useful by just pressing E on an ADC. Can't do that with any other support. You can't miss every spell with any other support in the game and still be useful quite like Janna can. Just press E on a target and you've done your job good enough.

How is a free AD buff define Janna as a support that specializes in putting distance between enemies and carries? Meanwhile it's apparently odd for a tank to initiate and have sustain, somehow.

From Janna's tips (playing against): "Janna's at her strongest when buffing another ally. If you can harass her enemy, it will weaken her ability to fight you."

Also, you really need to open a dictionary and search for "free". How is an ability with a cooldown and a mana cost that goes up to 110 (more than many ultimates, but then again Janna is used to high mana costs glances at tornado) in any way "free"? It is a opportunity cost by virtue of the CD and a resource cost by virtue of the mana cost.

70-110 mana for a shield giving nothing else would be an outrageous mana cost even by Janna's standards.

TeCoolMage1 votes

Yes, it's ridiculous, but the point of having a shield is to shield people, not to give them better offensive power, which Janna is meant to stop, not allow.

It's an outrageous cost but they try to sweeten it with AD, when getting in a close range to give AD in a teamfight is rarely a good idea as she's inherently fragile. It should be something that can be used to a full effect when running away.

The range on the shield is good enough that she can use it relatively safely. Plus, there needs to be an incentive for her to get closer to threats.

Now, let's look at shields that can be cast on allies, from champions:

Shields that give offense: Janna Lulu Shields that grant other stats: Karma Shields with special effects: Thresh (well, not really, but it's tied to his lantern), Morgana AoE shields: Sona (+ the heal on Sona and an ally), Lux Karma (with mantra-empowered E) Shields that are nothing but single target shields: ...

It allows depth to gameplay to have multi-purpose shields, as it offers choices to the player.

TeCoolMage1 votes

Lulu's shield as a support is to do a tiny bit of damage, but mainly exists for being a shield and for the Q slow. Much more defensive.

Karma has a shield that goes both ways, but is better used defensively when taking damage AND moving

Morgana and Thresh are definitely defensive unless thresh is going for a movespeed build to dive into the enemy team.

Sona and Lux are teamfight based and mostly defensive.

And NONE of these supports are mainly defensive, except maybe Morgana. Sona and lux do burst, thresh is initiation, and Lulu is just all around utility for both chasing and running.

I'd be glad if they replaced the random stats with something defensive, and possibly risky if possible. Janna's AD buff existed purely because she needed something to do while standing back and waiting for a disengage to be needed, and it ended up being on a long cooldown shield that could only be used on an ADC going ham, which was a terrible fix. The part they DID get right was her Q, being a proactive defensive peel, and her zephyr, which was a self sacrifice ability. Just give her shield a small cooldown and something that gives her a reason to not spam it, and she'll be in a much better state than relying on a single stat mid teamfight (AD on shield) before using her entire combo for disengage.

Lulu's shield provides damage to her ADC, and the spell itself doubles as a poking ability that reveals enemies and enables Qs.

Karma's shield, being tied to a strong speed buff, is very strong in situations where you want to go aggro too - it is pretty hard to escape from her ally when she uses her Q to slow you and her E to speed him/her up.

The fact that Morgana and Thresh's shields are defensive does not change the fact that they provide more to their team than just shielding, which was my point.

It's not a random stat. Why can't you get that in your head? Janna exists to protect an empower a valuable target, and rarely will you find a more valuable target than the team's ADC. The fact that it's AD over AP goes well with the fact that she can also shield and buff her tower. As it stands now, the mana cost and opportunity cost are good deterrent to shield spamming, so I don't see why you would want it on a shorter CD.

Have you considered targeting her passive instead of her active spells first?

Her passive offers a ton of free power that requires no skill from the player, and is also frustrating for her opponents as it allows her to provide peel for her team 100% of the time, regardless of cooldowns or available mana. On top of that, her passive allows her to rotate her team more effectively - I feel like these are cases of power that Janna just doesn't need.

Please, before you make the same mistake of "Nerf every spell on her kit 1 by 1" -> "finally nerf passive" -> "buff her because she's underperforming".

If you're interested in a fun, interactive passive that allows for Janna players to feel good about disengage, and gives her opponents opportunities for counter play, please check this thread out. This suggestion would remove team-rotation from her power budget, as well as limit her disengage to having mana and cooldowns available. I'm confident this would impact her overall performance in a fun way for both her and her opponents.

I'd much rather we preserve the fun parts of her kit (power on her ultimate) than preserve her current passive.

YCitizenSnipsY2 votes

Why should be shielding people and also giving them AD at the same time? Her identity is to disengage well, which she obviously does better than any support in the game currently. Why should she also be giving a mechanic that gives her ADC more power in lane when its already hard enough to even trade with a Janna in lane.

These nerfs don't hit anything she is supposed to be doing, and they aren't even out right getting rid of something she really doesn't need in the first place. I mean I see the name and know you biased as all hell, but you honestly cant tell me that these nerfs are unwarranted. Nobody complains about Janna's passive when they lane against her, especially since its no longer global. Everybody complains about the "free BF Sword" she gives her ADC while also shielding them, even thought its already hard enough to either trade or engage against her.

Mârty6 votes

I don't understand where you're coming from.

My only request was to address her passive. If, after giving her a more interactive passive that offers counterplay for her opponents, she still needs to be tuned back, then by all means continue with these changes. I don't even mention her shield in my post :|

Photos of Ghosts2 votes

What they're saying is that the AD on shield is a bit unfitting to her peeling thematic. I agree with that, although it's not necessarily a bad thing. As a good Janna player, do you not think that Janna's and Morgana's shields would have made more sense if swapped? NOTE: I'm not talking about swapping them now that people played them both for years, but as of release. Janna's supposed to peel for her team, and stopping CC is great for that. Morgana on the contrary picks out people, puts ambient damage under them during the trade, and heals herself up for that. It'd be fitting to have her shield give more trading/killiny power.

Nice idea on swapping the shields but if it happens in the current state, Janna will be perma-banned :D Would need some change on her other abilities

V3.14:Tailwind.png Tailwind Tailwind range reduced to 800 from global. Tailwind movement speed buff increased to 5% from 3%.

Janna's passive has already been hit, it was hit back in season 3 because it was global, which gutted her passive and made it difficult to be helpful with it in general with such a short range.

Riot then continued by adding 200 range, but it was still ineffective.

V5.4:Tailwind.png Tailwind Changed to "Tailwind gives all allies in range a movement speed bonus only while they are moving toward Janna" from "Tailwind gives all allies and Janna in range a movement speed bonus". Movmement speed changed to 8% from 5%. Ranged increased to 1250 from 1000

Lastly, in this last change to her passive, Riot took a different approach. Janna is suppose to be the "Disengage Queen" in League of Legends, therefore they changed it from being at 1000 range to 1250 to provide a better use for the change as to how her passive works, and her allies can get to her faster so that she can disengage better.

MY THOUGHT ON THE CHANGE (WILL BE ITALICIZED) As a Janna main for 3 seasons now, this nerf is required. However, I feel as if she is being hit too hard too fast in the mid-game. However, I do understand that the whole point of this is to make it less of who you shield for more damage, the whole point of her shield is to provide some sort of protector against damage, not completely give her (ADC if you have played since ~season 2) marksmen so much damage. Furthermore, I have pulled some crazy stuff against low health enemy marksmen while I was low myself because of the amount of AD which comes from it's level and I use to run AP on her which increased the AD further, meaning I had about +34 AD at level 5.

I think the reason Janna has been over performing is due to how strongly the bot lane meta is favoring all in tanks at the moment. This is particualry true in how effective she is at countering all in supports like Alistar. The second the meta shifts to favor poke supports like Sona or Nami, Janna struggles immensely.

Janna has been the victim of more nerfs than any other champion in the game, with quite a few of these nerfs being significant changes to her kit. I worry about her feeling increasingly clunky as each component is nerfed time and time again. I agree she is strong right now, but I'd personally rather see power reallocated from her passive than just straight nerfs to the bread and butter of her kit.

You don't need to think about the passive to benefit from it, that's the entire reason it's problematic.

Her passive is a form of peel. There is constant peel coming from the Janna player who is doing nothing, so long as they aren't actively dying and running into t he enemy team.

The meta shifted away from poke supports TWO YEARS AGO, when are you expecting this miraculous switch back to pokey supps?

Abyssphere4 votes

{quoted}

The meta shifted away from poke supports TWO YEARS AGO, when are you expecting this miraculous switch back to pokey supps?

It's never going to happen, but that's kind of the problem. People are tired of the support meta revolving entirely around tank supports and wish Riot would do something about their stranglehold on the role rather than just nerfing Janna continuously because in a world where she counters 100% of the meta, she's going to be incredibly strong. Janna's amazing resilience to nerfs is unmatched and the reason for that is because she will play against an engage tank in lane 90% of the time and it's just impossible for her to do bad in that environment. If Janna had a poor win rate with people constantly picking tanks into her then she'd just not be functioning as a champion.

I know it's easier to just nerf Janna than buff poke supports or otherwise rework them to give them a reason to exist but for people who don't want to play tank supports it is really disheartening to see Riot consistently choose to nerf their biggest counter (who does very poorly against poke supports) rather than just... make it so the meta isn't completely defined by them. If they made poke supports worthwhile then not only would the Janna problem be taken care of but people wouldn't feel like they had no choice BUT to play Janna or Morgana if they didn't want to play a tank. A bunch of champions who've been trash for a long time now would finally be respected champions again and you might get actually interactive bot lanes in competitive play rather than two supports who don't press a single button until junglers arrive.

SpecterVonBaren2 votes

It's why I'd like them to nerf Janna so that they can then be like, "Hhm... no one is taking any utility sups bot lane except for Cancer Goat and sometimes Bard... in fact, everyone that CAN play a utility sup in a solo lane is doing it. Maybe we should consider giving people a reason to take a utility support"

One of the biggest reasons was the introduction of the item 3302 which took away utility support strength against all in sups, their poke. Both of the other items merely strengthen a playstyle, item 3303 gives more AP and damage on hit for pokey supports, item 3301 gives sustain and safety for passive supports an item 3302.... gives sustain for a class of champs that aren't supposed to have that.

Relic Shield SHOULD be giving something like a temporary damage boost when the tribute passive is proc'd because that strengthens the nature of the all in tanky sups instead of getting rid of their weakness to poke.

Stephenizgod3 votes

I don't particularly think either of those nerfs are a bad thing, but is it possible Janna is over-performing only because a lot of other Supports are under-performing? I mean Alistar and Janna are all I see all the time with a random Bard thrown in every once in awhile. Alistar offers amazing engage and Janna offers amazing peel, they perform so well because the current meta is "Kill the other team; Don't die to the other team" since death timers and paper turrets means one bad teamfight at 25 minutes means you lose even if you were winning all game and they just got lucky. Alistar can create these lucky situations with his super engage and extreme tankiness, and Janna can hold off 5 people for a long time and get her team to safety fairly easily.

Hey Meddler, are there any plans to nerf Janna further? Even though she is not a staple pick in competitive play as a support, she is perennially popular in solo queue at all mmr brackets. She's horribly obnoxious to play against because she promotes passivity from the enemy team, and feels like if you go even with her during laning phase she will outscale you. Even more annoying is that she is one of the champions that can build Mejai's safely, which gives her more movespeed, and then at 15 stacks you get 10% MORE movespeed.

  1. Mejai is neither on her most popular nor most successful build
  2. Due to her reliance on a shield instead of a heal, any damage that you do to her lane will stick; she actually encourages aggressive play from poke lanes
  3. Janna is a her weakest while laning, you are supposed to win lane against her

She is strong just because tank supports are overpowered, and have been so, for ages.

She is the only viable counter to them and you are nerfing the symptom instead of the cause.

Current meta is Alistar-Braum-Janna-Bard, yet the only one who's getting nerfed (incredibly hard) is her, Alistar nerfs are a joke and Braum isn't even getting nerfed.

I remind you Alistar has been pick-or-ban for more than 10 months already, Braum has been obnoxiously overpowered for almost the same time too, they are in need of nerfs they are picked every single game, way more than Janna.

healing allies up

You know you nerfed her healing for no reason a while ago, right? Not that there's a single thing on Janna you haven't tried to destroy already, of course.

Janna is a force multiplier in the purest sense. She cannot function on her own against any other champion at any stage in the game. Instead of being a threat on her own, you choose her to empower another ally, who needs to be at least 2x as strong to make up for the fact that her own value is effectively 0 champions when alone.

You're also going to make it easier for your hypermobile champions to just jump back onto her after using her ult correctly... why? Why is Janna being the #1 disengage support and having everything else destroyed in favor of that (thanks for the completely unwarranted Q gutting from a while ago, btw) mean that she still gets her disengage capabilities ruined? Are you planning to give her back any one of the hundred things you have taken from her in exchange?

Also, overperforming for a significant period of time? Has she been overperforming since Thresh's release? Because that's a significant period of time for a champion to be overperforming! Did you catch the Thresh mention? It's great that Janna is only allowed to be good at one thing now and is ACTUAL garbage at everything else (and now you're crippling that one thing) when you've got a list of generalist golden boys like Thresh who are amazing at EVERYTHING and you turn a blind eye! Can you even name a champ who's between Janna and Thresh in terms of disengage? Disengage alone! And Thresh buries Janna in every other respect except healing, which Janna does with significant opportunity cost.

This isn't balance. This is favoritism. This is Riot saying "don't play Janna, play Thresh instead". Why? Your new dynamic queue has made it clear that once again, nobody wants to support. Why are you dead set on making support as unappealing as possible? A strong Janna affects no other lane; you've already seen to that, and in teamfights her shield and disengage is pretty much all she can offer. Until you finally manage to delete her from the game, of course, which has been your plan for years.

(Ps. We all know the real reason why Janna is a "problem" and Thresh isn't. I just want to see if anyone at Riot has the integrity to come out and say it.)
