is vi top/mid a troll play?

I know its not in the meta for lanes, and she is a top tier jungler. I was forced to take her top lane and during the laning phase I went against a riven (supposed counter based on champion select) and I played very passively until ganks where even 1 cc from the jungler plus my q kept riven in place til death. Her burst while building tank was big. I play at the plat 5 level, so not great nor bad. Our team lost the game due to very poor team fighting phase, but I felt very strong in lane as vi especially post 6. I know ranged champs are very popular right now top, (gnar,liss,Vlad) and the pick would be match up specific but I'm curious if there are crazy people that take her outside the jungle with success? Btw, teleport bot lane ult adc was sick as hell. If someone does lane her how do u build her what's your approach I ended up getting brutalizer and building tank, cuz against a high gold/low plat riven I felt good for laning and team fighting given any communication or team follow through (completely lacking that game). All input welcome, even if its calling me a troll or an idiot. Lastly, I've played for 2.5 years and never seen a vi in lane. Thanks for advice.

At the start of Season 4 I played Vi top and it worked. Mostly vs tank champs (Shy, Mundo). The problem is her Q takes so long to get the full use out, that any amount of CC or a miss really hurts her dmg out put. Granted I would not pick her top unless I were on the same page as my jungler for a lot of ganks post 6. Too many top champs any more can just walk/jump/dash away from a soft engage that she strugles if they also have ranged (hello Gnar).

My friend never plays her in the jungle, only Mid or Top lane and he usually does quite well. There are some games where his score is not good but that is not his fault, he usually wins lane.

Vi can 1v1 pretty much anyone thanks to her W, so yeah I can't imagine her losing to very many melee champs. Guys like Gnar and Lulu, or other ranged tops would likely give her a pretty hard time since she has no way of easily farming from a distance.

If you watch her champion spotlight, Phreak opens up by saying 'Whether at home in the Top Lane, or in the Jungle...' which means Riot originally intended her to be played Top anyway.

Anything can work anywhere if you're good enough or the situation fits
