With the failure of runeglaive, can machete's monster burn just be given an AP ratio?
Runeglaive is not the first and with the number of under powered AP jungle items league has gone through it won't be the last.
It is not that completed items are bad. Magus for example was a solid item that almost every AP jungler could appreciate. It had two primary problems though. First the initial clear and second even after completing the item you were mana hungry. Both of these problems can be resolved by giving the monster burn on machete an AP ratio. We are not looking for creative solutions that innovative players will find a way to use in unintended ways. We are not looking for an item that is unique, we just want an AP jungle item that is viable.
Giving the monster burn on machete an AP ratio is easy to balance as it is simply a matter of adjusting the ratio, it can't be abused by solo lanes since it only damages monster, and it doesn't give non-AP junglers any additional advantage. What it does do is create a viable jungle item no matter what ends up being the final item (Keep runeglaive and bring back Magus, no reason there can't be both).
An AP ratio helps with clears prior to having the jungle item, additionally by providing decent damage (but not an overwhelming amount) from a non-mana source it helps preserve mana for junglers after the item is completed. While not allowing them to clear mindlessly with auto attacks. If there is concerns about the burn scaling to unreasonable levels it is easy enough to cap the damage it can deal.
A straight forward and simple solution to balancing AP junglers, without giving them silly buffs like the ability to root monsters.
