Give Ryze to Stashu, reroll Cassiopeia
Sort of a piggy-back discussion from this thread by Kowe The Ewok
So I'm not Canastus or Stashu or anyone of the many others who've been incredibly involved with the Cassiopeia rework, but I've been following most of the discussion (largely passively after I quickly learned that I didn't really understand Cassiopeia well enough to contribute). I was pretty interested in the rework when I first saw it and thought the ideas had some potential.
Here's my stance: I think Stashu is a talented designer. I think he has some really cool ideas. Judging from what I've seen, those ideas don't seem to fit Cassiopeia. Stashu's work was largely focused at turning Cassiopeia into a monsterous, late-game, machine-gun APC. Two conflicts I see/have heard with this:
- At the time, the niche was fairly unique; however, Azir was released a few days later, not to mention Ryze has been around since the beginning (more on him in a bit); both of these champions arguably better suited to the role than Cassiopeia
- Cassiopeia's theme, as I've been seeing from the various threads dedicated to her, is as a poison mage. Very few champions use poison and none do it in quite the same way as Cass. Brand and Malz has some combos and DoT, but wearing someone down through poisons? That sounds like Cass to me.
Switching gears: anyone who has played top lane in the past six months or so knows how frustrating it is playing against a good Ryze (he's bullying the crap out of you in lane and he's only going to get stronger as the game goes on). The wiki lists him as being due for a VU sometime soon(tm). His Q has basically been gutted, he seems to be sitting in the space of "nerfed until we figure out what to do with him", and there have been some rumors of him getting some gameplay changes as well (especially since ChampUp seems to be combining the two a lot recently). Basically he seems like he's in a good position for a reworking.
Monsterous, late-game, machine-gun APC is what Ryze was born to do. Stacking (to item thresholds) is something that Ryze does naturally. Comboing spells to get resets is central to playing Ryze well. Gaining or unlocking power is something that fits Ryze thematically. Call me crazy but Ryze seems like he's begging to be Cassiopeia right now.
