Putting the Runes Rework into Perspective

A lot of people seem to be disappointed with the rune rework because of the IP refund, which they find inadequate. I understand where they're coming from, but I think it needs to be put in perspective.

  1. IP is free and you get it playing a free game that is generally a lot of fun. The game doesn't have many glitches and is really intricate. Games like this cost money to make and maintain. If you expect everything to be free then you would not have such an amazing game. So yes, you may have spent money towards champions because you didn't have enough for them after purchasing runes, but think about that money as more of a contribution to keep the game improvements coming. Riot needs to earn money, and for the amount of hour that we play it, I'm sure the amount of money we put into it is fair. Try calculating your total money spent for each hour you've played.

  2. If you are a veteran who has been playing for years, you've probably had runes for a while. You've used the runes for a while. So why would you expect a full refund for something you've used? you would never expect that for anything you have in real life. Try using a video game for over a month and getting a 100% refund from Gamestop when you sell it back. I know it's not the same because runes are being taken away, but there is some correlation.

  3. This new system is an improvement for everyone. Especially beginners or more casual gamers. So enjoy it.

Coming from my perspective: I have been playing since season 3. I have never purchased a champion with RP. I have purchased many skins with RP because I want this game to earn money so it will keep improving. I spent a lot of IP on runes, but I got a lot of use out of them. I am going to get some IP back after getting that use that I could buy new champions with, but let's be honest no one play every champion so you don't absolutely need them all.

I'm generally satisfied with the change. Riot is a business. They need to earn money, and their refund is actually pretty fair. They really seem to be trying to make everyone happy and it seems like they've really listened to people on this one and did their best.

TLDR: The refund is fair enough for something you used already. IP is free and so is the game, any money you put into it was your choice. All money you put into it is investing in the game's improvement and future. Riot seems to have really tried to do their best on compensating the players on this one. Stop crying and be realistic about what is feasible.

Not exactly. First off, time is not free. Before someone says it, there have been times where me and my friends would play specifically to grind IP as oppossed to because we wanted to. Normally its those extra couple games at the end of the day. Secondly, the $$$ that was sunk into the game to buy champions so you could save IP for runes is an indirect cost. Third, IP boosts also cost cash.

This is an absolutely god awful comparison and I dont understand why peope use it. Runes dont degrade over time. They dont wear out like a car. They don't degrade after use. You dont suddenly start getting less stats from them becaus you've used them. And more importantly in the real world a company cant just come to your house and take a product back after 1 year that you purchased then proceed to give you 20% of what you paid for it. Thats NOT how it works. Seriously, stop using this god awful comparison.

Its a system that me and other veteran players are paying 50,000-100,000 or maybe even more IP to gain access to. A brand new level 1 account has access to the exact same system for 0 cost. ?????????????? How is this a reward? How is charging us to have access to a system we already have access to some sort of reward?
