I Love League, But Hate Riot
Before I bombard you with a year long essay I just want to clarify a few things
- I've been playing since S2 and have seen most of what league has had to offer
- This is a rant so be prepared.
- This is my opinion, if you disagree that's fine, just be vocal about what you disagree with.
So without further ado here is my /rant
I absolutely love League of Legends, the entire concept of a 5v5 arena MOBA where your objective is to destroy the enemy teams Nexus infused with heavy doses of solo capability, teamwork, communication, and map/objective control really creates an atmosphere where most of what you do actually affects the game in the long run. To be honest It's sort of a flawless concept. It's a simple idea that's only held back by one major flaw, the company that created the game; Riot. And its really strange, over the years Riot went from "Hmm, a lot of people don't like X so lets see what happens when we do Y" and the changes they made either impacted the game hugely for either better or worse or did nothing at all. Now it's a complete shit show. Back then Riot was the little kid who didn't know any better and was just doing things because it seemed fun, not knowing what the possible consequences could be. Now Riot is a grown up, stuck up, bratty ass, nappy little teen that feels that they are invincible and can do whatever the hell they want and that we, the consumer, are mere door mats for them to step on.
We've all seen it. Through all the champion additions, changes, item buffs, jungle buffs, favoritism toward certain champions and game play aspects (Mobility in particular), overloaded kits, upright dumb updates that did nothing but add a plethora of broken champions (Yes Juggernaut update that would be you), Dynamic Que (Kill me), 90% ban/pick rate champs that weren't changed for months on ends and the list goes on and on. Let's take a look back at just a few of the examples that I remember:
Remember how champions like Lee Sin, Zed, and Fizz became the trademark champs of League and how no matter what the meta was they were still viable to all hell and could easily be picked at any moment?
Remember when mobility really started to take off? Before the most mobile champion was Leblanc and Lee Sin, then they released Kalista the almighty dodge queen that had 2 insanely strong ways to be mobile, might I remind you that both forms of mobility were procked by the two main things champions can do; auto attack, and use abilities. Then came Ekko, the all-mighty OP king who just to play against you would have to go through Chemotherapy with his 2 mobility abilities, an AOE nuke that gave him health, 3 slows, a stun, a shield, 3 prock passive that did absurd damage and gave him a speed boost, ability to build tank and still do 8 thousand damage in 1 nanosecond etc.
Then with the mage rework: Protobelt. "How can we make it fair for immobile mages to have a small form of mobility? Any suggestions?" "Yeah, how about we give them a belt?" "A belt?" "Yeah like a belt but you can like dash and stuff" -Room goes Silent- "Give this man a raise Johnny and start building that belt ASAP!"
90% ban rate Kassadin who would just run a train on your entire team without using any Vaseline, the new 90% ban rate Kassadin: Malzahar who just gets two items and insta nukes anyone within half a map radius with his space aids.
The random out of the blue changes to possibly one of the most balanced states of the game that we had seen with the new introduction of Cinderhulk which was then quickly changed for whatever reason to allow for the next meta to come up; the devourer meta which only recently did we get out of.
Speaking of devourer remember the almighty 1 trick build that anyone could get and you would instantly win? Devourer, BOTRK, Guinsoos, Straight tank. Don't you just love it when a Annie comes up to you and just annihilates you with 6K Auto attack damage? Yeah me too.
Then came Dynamic Que, oh yes the almighty Dynamic Que! GET ON YOUR HANDS AND KNEES FOR THIS RANK SYSTEM IT IS THE BEST.... Right?....right? WRONG. "Don't worry fans! we made sure to pair you and 4 other amazing solo players with a 5 man que so that you could get a better chance of winning!!!!" "But riot, if we have a better chance of winning, why are 5 man ques winning 80 percent of games when not paired against another 5 man que?" "SHUT UP AND TAKE OUR DARK STAR THRESH!" "But riot, what about all the boosting that is going on with all these kids playing with their friends on smurfs?" "Oh, don't worry we will just ban all the boosters! Problem solved!" .....???? So you're going to ban about 60% of your community? Good idea riot. I love it.
And lastly my final point which honestly kills Riot as a whole and has done nothing but destroyed them; their inability to revert on changes that ruined their game. This one really doesn't take rocket science to figure out. If you change something and it completely fails you go back to what was working. This applies to literally everything, whether its a video game or real life. You don't see a company like, lets say Coke-Cola change the recipe for coke just to have everyone hate it and then go "Oh well its there so you better like it or find something else to drink!" Just no. You go back to what was working and or change the changes you made so that what you intended to have happen actually happens. If you wanted Mordekaiser to be a duo bot then go ahead test it out, but once it utterly fails you have to either change him so that it works well, or revert him back to what he was. You can't just sit there like "It is how it is so deal with it." That's not what good companies do.
I absolutely love league of legends, I personally think it's still one of the best concepts for a game out there (this applies to all Moba's not just LoL). But when you constantly become a brat and refuse to listen to the community that literally built your entire studio to what it is today you will never be a good gaming company. Riot, if you want league to stay for another 7 years you need to start making changes to how you handle your own self made problems. You can't ignore your fans, fill them with false promises, and then try to blind side us by giving us skins, new champions, and new gamemodes and instead fix the problems that are happening within your own game.
End /rant.
