All I see being played in Ranked support are Jana and Thresh
Thresh and Jana dominate the ranked match Support champions. And yet they nerfed Sona again. Sometimes I see Soraka being used as well and Nami. Yet they nerfed Sona.
One of the most important aspects of League of Legends is the huge variety of champions. Team composition, drafting, and choosing counters for the opposing team is a very important part of the game.
If every ranked match uses the same four support champions things become dumbed down and dull.
The best way to tell if a champion is not playable is by whether or not the ranked player base will actually play it in competition. If they don't play it then the Champion is underpowerd, too complex, doesn't scale high enough, or another champion does the same job but better.
