List of champs that have a spin move

Clockwork Mouse··47 votes·6,253 views

In real life, spinning is not something one would want to do in combat. For 1 you would be losing sight of your enemy as you spin and also be exposing your unguarded back to them. Not to mention that even if you managed to hit someone by doing this, if your weapon is a blade there is a high chance you lose your blade alignment and lose some of your cutting power. However, this is not the case in Runeterra, where spinning is not only viable but in the right hands, the spin move has propelled some individuals into legends. Here is a list of these people.

Akali Her Cresent Slash Amumu His Tantrum Darius His Decimate Garen His Judgement Jax His Counterstrike Katarina Her Voracity and her Death Lotus Kayn His Reaping Slash Nocturne His Umbra Blades RekSai Her Queen's Wrath Renekton His Cull the Meek Riven Her Broken Wings (only the first 2 cast, the 3rd is a flip) Tryndamere His Spinning Slash MonkeyKing His Decoy and Cyclone XinZhao His Crescent Guard Yasuo His Steel Tempest after he uses Sweeping Blade Zed His Shadow Slash

Honorable Mentions: AurelionSol His Celestial Expansion is always spinning, but he isn't spinning himself Camille Her Tactical Sweep has her spin around at the start, but she only attacks in front of her Diana Same with Sol, her Pale Cascade is spinning around her, but she is not spinning to make it happen (She does move her sword around her body though) Hecarim His Q, but only during URF Jhin His 4th shot, but we all know he is just stylin' Heimerdinger Has a great spin move, but it doesn't do damage Jayce His To the Skies is a flip, not a spin Kled His Chaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaarge!!! indeed has centrifugal force, but he is rolling, not spinning LeeSin His Dragon's Rage seems to have him spinning around to kick, but it is still just a kick Rakan His Grand Entrance has him spinning, but it seems that the effect is the jumping part and the spinning is just flourish Lulu Her Wild Groth is cast by her spinning. I was debating whether to add this to the main list or not, but in the end, the spin itself is not what is causing the damage, but the spell that was cast Shyvana Her Burnout involves fire that spins, but she isn't spinning TahmKench His Tongue Lash involves spinning, but the spin is only to generate force to throw out his tongue. TwistedFate His Wild Cards can't be thrown without him fully spinning around first. Velkoz His Void Rift, can't open a rift into another dimension without spinning. Xayah Her Deadly Plumage, Bladecaller, and Featherstorm all involve spinning to better throw or pull back her feathers.

You mean combat isn't realistic in video games?

Rakan Grand Entrance features spinning Morgana Dance is spinning

Clockwork Mouse4 votes

Hmm not sure where to put Grand Entrance. It does involve spinning, but is it a spin move or a more of a jumping move?

grarrrg2 votes

Eh, hard to tell. Especially because his moves have a lot of 'unnecessary flourish' to begin with. Honorable Mention at least.

When a Garen is spinning at me at full speed and I’m Cassiopeia, will my ult stun him or will I need to time it well? When do I tell if he’s looking at me?

grarrrg6 votes

You pray he's facing the right direction, and hope you can stop the JUSTICE. (spoiler: you cannot stop JUSTICE)

Try playing katarina into cass

Then try playing cass into katarina

As long as he's moving toward you while spinning, it counts as looking at you.

Spinning attack is to some extent viable among blunt weapons like clubs and hammers.

Staffs, tonfa, and other weapons with similar focuses also use a lot of spins to build momentum too. Though the user does not spin, but rather they spin the weapon in some manner.

Many throwing weapons like slings also have the user to spin the weapon to build up force too.

If league was a 3d moviment game, it would be a sphere.

Eedat1 votes

League is a 3D game actually

TehNACHO5 votes

Its animations are 3D. The gameplay itself is on a 2D plane. 2.5D effectively.

Eedat1 votes

No, it's full blown 3D. There is actually high and low ground in LoL and the entire have is rendered in 3D. When you walk down the ramp into river, you are actually walking down into river. It affects how your hitboxes and such interact with someone on higher ground

TehNACHO3 votes

Yeah, all of this being the 3D visuals interacting with the 2D plane the game is built on. 2.5D

Eedat1 votes

It's not "3D visuals"on a "2D plane". Your character actually moves up and down dependant on the 3D terrain. It's actual 3D terrain. If you don't believe me, YouTube it. The terrain is a full 3D model.

TehNACHO5 votes

Yes, your character actually looks like it moves up and down dependant on the 3D terrain. It doesn't change how abilities or other mechanics in the game interact with champions however. Abilities can't fly overhead because you're in the Dragon pit and you're not, for example. Almost as if the actual gameplay of the game is, and stay with me here, on a 2D plane. Oh shoot, this is literally the second definition of a 2.5D game, I wonder if those principles apply here.

There is only one instance when the 3D affects the gameplay and, ironically enough, it's a visual bug. There is literally no argument to support that LoL is a 3D game other than that it looks 3D.

grarrrg2 votes

To summarize: Looks 3D Functionally 2D

SzGamer2272 votes

Yep. You could build the game as a top-down with 2D graphics and the gameplay would be identical.

Eedat1 votes

It doesn't change how abilities or other mechanics in the game interact with champions however.

YES IT DOES

I don't understand why so many people are arguing against such an easy to look up fact. This isn't a matter of option. LoL IS a full 3D game. It's not a debate

TehNACHO1 votes

Lmao that's the bug

Eedat1 votes

It's not a bug. It's a result of a fixed camera on a 3D plane. It's the same as an optical illusion. If you really want more proof, just look up knock ups. Knock ups are literal proof of a Z axis. Notice how when you get knocked up, your hit box stays at your feet and doesn't move. Notice how that is different from a displacement that moves your hitbox across the X and Y axes. What more proof do you want exactly? There are literally dozens of abilities in the game thats purpose are to interact with the third Z axis. Notice that it's the third axis. Third as is 3. 3 as in 3D.

Why do people just refuse to admit they're wrong? This isn't a matter of debate. It's so easy to look up too. Like I said, this isn't a matter of opinion. You're just wrong. Get over it

TehNACHO2 votes

Knock ups are literal proof of a Z axis. Notice how when you get knocked up, your hit box stays at your feet and doesn't move.

...You do realize this is a description of 2.5D gameplay right.

Please actually read the article. The game is 2.5D, a mix of 2D and 3D elements. There is no debate because you're not even trying to read what I'm telling you.

iamthegoatofwar3 votes

Ok I'll try and maybe go through the list on reasons.

Akali Ok this one you've got me Amumu He's a small child and throwing a tantrum. I am not shocked he be spinning or turning his back. Darius Viable tactic since hes using a heavy axe. Build up momentum and then cut through everything around you Garen Similar to darius but he uses a heavy sword. Building and keeping momentum while cutting through everything Jax Blunt weapon and also a defensive move to stun attackers. Katarina Ok voracity I can not say why, but death lotus makes sense as it's the only way she'd hit several targets with daggers in that short a time frame. Kayn That is something his weapon is made to do. It is a scythe using it in a manor such as that is not uncommon. Nocturne hmmm...anyone got an answer for this guy? RekSai Wild animal...perhaps if shes used to trying to have to defend from all sides that would a be reason she does it on instinct. Renekton Perhaps just blind rage? Riven She does that as a gap close and strike if you watch the way her body spins. Tryndamere Battle berserker nothing odd about him doing that. MonkeyKing It's a decoy for one so it doesn't matter. For two he uses a blunt weapon designed to have far reach. XinZhao Long weapon...though not sure I can recommend doing it with a spear since that's asking for it to break. Yasuo For the edge lords Zed See yasuo

Rathar Dashing1 votes

MonkeyKing His ult, though?

MonkeyKing His ult, though?

Same logic as xin. He's doing that for AOE and reach. Not to meniton apparently he gets faster and faster during his ult as he goes on according to the description. This hints that hes building momentum while doing this

Spinning may be nonexistent in real life combat for practical uses (such as war) because we have...guns!

But spinning is used quite often in a variety of martial arts (as shown above) and is seen a LOT in high action films such as hero movies and fantasy stuff. And that's what this game is, fantasy. Spinning is visually pretty and fun so it makes sense that so many champions have abilities that have to do with spinning. Also since this is a very visual game, the use of spinning is sometimes needed to clearly indicate what tf is going on. Like for Jhin's 4th shot, for example (which you missed in your list btw), he spins around and shoots. Of course doing this irl would be super silly, but that's not the point. The point is WOW Jhin is doing a BIG DMG rn and it's FUN! It feels satisfying :D

Let's try spinning, that's a neat trick!

Barkley2 votes

This is fun. Next, make a thread on champions that use a weapon that would be absolutely ineffective in the kind of combat commonly seen in league.

Example - anyone that brings a dagger to a fight involving guns.

Example 2 - anyone that brings their fists to a fight involving daggers.

Example 3 - Xerath and Syndra are literal, actual demigods.

I figure the key is to construct a suitable PITA rotating reference frame such that every champion has spinning moves in that reference frame. Inertial reference frames are boring.

Would argue that rolling and flipping are legitimate spins however, just about a different axis. I reckon flipping/rolling shares many of the realistic downsides as what you consider to be spinning moves anyway.

Still, in games it's all about spin to win.

Orianna and her ball spins.

ValyrianBlade2 votes

Correct me if I'm wrong, but spinning should be a bad move because people don't typically practice for 1-v-many combat.

If you're in that situation, a desperation spin and hope to hit everything is probably more optimal than focusing on the targets in front of you properly and outright ignoring the one behind you that can take your exposed back easily...

Theoretically, with practice one should be able to develop technique to be able to do a successful spinning attack when necessary. These champions are supposed to be able to take on groups of enemies, so it makes sense that they would practice for this.

Of course it's silly that they'd use a spinning attack against a single target, but that's because it's a game and you'd have a host of balance issues if you made a non-spin equivalent to use that was stronger on individual targets if there weren't additional targets around... Especially when these spin moves are meant to make the champion an aoe specialist (eg Kata) and giving them extra single target damage just ruins that.

SociaI Justice1 votes

i mean xin and jax aren't actually pulling any spinner moves, they are just spinning their weapon around.

Faceroll Tactics2 votes

Xin does what is akin to a leg sweep, but with his spear, spinning.

Jax’s release of his counter strike has him spin.

Blitzball Player1 votes

Talon flipping over walls Vayne tumbling maybe Rammus wonder how he could see when he's balled up

but yeah they might be in honorable mentions

I'd tend to agree for champions that use using upper body motions in the attack, but that's more to do with how your body moves.

Between your legs and your head, you've got two points of ~90 degree rotation (your hips and your neck), which means that you can be winding up an attack breaking vision mid rotation, before quickly snapping your vision back to the target to aim the attack. You didn't include LeeSin Dragon's Rage, which is listed as a roundhouse kick, but the animation itself is actually a full (colloquially called a) tornado kick, being a 360 degree rotation into the roundhouse. Though different martial arts term kicks differently, there's generally a differentiation between a 360 rotation and a 540 rotation, as the latter provides more power and results in the opposite leg facing forward after the attack.

There's a couple of ways that you can achieve greater power via a rotating kick over simply turning over, by either building rotational momentum or using your own body as a counter weight to the point of contact (similar to a trebuchet). You can swing your upper body towards the ground, using one leg as a pivot point, and the other as the contact point. But the general rule of thumb, is that the more you rotate, the more energy you can put into your rotation and the harder it will hit. But this power increase has diminishing returns as a result of having increasingly less contact with the ground the faster you rotate.

I did taekwondo for 13 years and minored in physics, i can't speak definitively, as I haven't like done research into the physics of kicking, but speculatively this is roughly what I've noticed from experience and observation.

Clockwork Mouse2 votes

When going over this I first thought he was just doing a very animated roundhouse kick. Looking again he does appear to spin his body around fully

deadlychuck2 votes

Yeah, it's actually really poorly animated, he just kinda picks his legs up off the ground and they rotate the model, and stick one out at the end xD
