In 2016 you can get everything from pings from your teammates. Chat is basically useless. The only thing its good for is telling your team NJ and complimenting them or making friends. And yes I know it sucks that a few people ruin it for everyone but that's life. It can of course also be used for toxic people. Ever since I started doing /mute all at the beginning of each game I haven't been tilted in a long time. I think riot should implement a setting that does the /mute all for you at the beginning. Hell yea! I agree, friend! And even if you mute all, you can still use chat to let your team know useful info like your intuitions on where you think the enemy team might be ie. baron, drag
