Looking to get a certain skin. I am an old player. Albeit old, not skilled. I played off an on since about 2013. Used to LP. With this new system is there any way to obtain skins/champs for free like you could with LP in the old days? I don't even know what to do with blue essence or any of this loot crap. Speaking of which if someone could tell me wtf to do with blue essence that'd be great.
Fairly certain you could never get champs/skins from LP, other than the victorious skin/champ for gold+. This is still a thing.
Presuming you meant IP, you couldn't get skins for that under normal circumstances. Champons you could buy for IP, and now you can buy them for BE instead (as BE is basically relabeled IP).
A couple times a year the BE emporium is stated to be a thing they do, where chromas and ward skins and even (for a lot of BE) a rare skin is available for BE.
Skins have typically always been RP only content.
That said, these days you can get mastery chests from earning S ranks on champs, which you can unlock with keys from playing honourably, which can contain skin shards which you can upgrade into actual skins, so it's possible to get skins for free if you're lucky. It's a bit of a process, and theres no way to guarantee it's a specific skin you want, but it's still something. Champ skins are intended to mainly come from RP though.
If you get S rank for a champ for the first time in the season, you will receive a chest, which you can unlock via collecting key shards overtime and combining 3 shards into 1 key.
Chests will potentially give champ skin shards, which you cam make it permanent via Orange Essence that may either come with the check unlock in small amounts, or you will have to disenchant some skin shards.
If you do not have enough Orange Essence to unlock the said skins, which everybody is short atm due to the infamous essence nerf, you can grab 3 skin shards and "reroll" into a random pentameter skin.

There is no way to obtain skins via Blue Essence outside of like URFwick which would be available in BE shop (the one that opened up during rune refund) if they make it annually like they said they may do, which the skin costs like 1 million BE or something insane. Though BE can be used to purchase chroma in the BE shop too, so can be used as substitute for skins if the chroma is available for a champ's Classic skin.
Otherwise free skins can only be collected via giveaway codes that random people may do on stream or whatever, going Gold5+ for the Victorious skins at the end of a season, or things like event missions that by completing the missions may grant players free icons, ward skins, or chromas through the completion of quests, and potential skin shards via token exchanged event specific chests to open.
