Maybe, just maybe the minions hurtbox overlapped just enough that the game considered the minion hit even though it appears is closer?

I feel like I've seen the opposite happen too, where i or a teammate is standing behind a minion and the hook just go through the minion.

Yeah, it's pretty rare, but it happens- just another of the sea of league bugs. I wonder how many hooks are bugged? Because you can only ever really know it's a bug for dead-center ones like that.
