Can someone explain this to me?

I don't understand what defensive stats are supposed to protect the most against: burst or sustained damage.

Thinking about it, I decided they probably are best for sustained because they reduce a flat amount of a small amount of damage over and over, while with burst, it reduces the total large sum by a flat amount. This would mean defense has a larger % effectiveness against many small amounts of damage.

However, ADCs are the most effective at killing tanks, not assassins.... Does this have to do with health and the sheer lack of damage of an assassin? Help me understand!

Nope, %damage reduction is the exact same for burst and DPS if they both equal the same amount of damage overall. But, burst is supposed to be a squishy killing stat, and since DPS should outclass burst in terms of damage dealt after a few seconds, tanks who build resists are more effective against burst.

Do the math. 50% of 100 per second for 4 seconds (100+100+100+100) is the same as 50% of 400 damage in 1 second and then no damage for the other 3 seconds.
