After winning my last placement match, I ended up with a 8-2 record. All solo queue matches and no duos. With all the hard work I putted in playing my placements, I felt great thinking that I'd break into Gold. Next thing you know the animation came up and I get placed in Silver 2.

I'm really disappointed with what I've placed into. Last season I got placed to Silver 3 with a 5-5 record and now I only go up 1 division with a much better record. It sort of sucks because I did so much better this season than last season and yet I only go up 1 division. It frustrates me because now I'm thinking I shouldn't have needed to try as hard in my placement matches if I'm just going to end up being silver again. If I play as normally as I do in normal games without the extra motivation to win then I'm sure that I can get to silver again.

From the other forum posts that I've read, they said that if you were silver last season you'll most likely be silver again this season even with a good record after placement matches. If placement matches work like this, then shouldn't it create an incentive for people in silver last season to not try too hard in their placement matches? There is no opportunity cost in them trying hard or not trying hard in placements because apparently people who are placed in silver last season can't get to gold now through placement matches. They can play normally as they would in normal games and they'd probably end up silver again.

Although it shouldn't be too hard to grind up to Gold 5 (and probably some of you people are wondering why not just grind up to gold), I'm not the type of person who ranks a lot. Most of the season I usually spend my time playing a few aram and normal games as well as studying for my classes. I usually rank near the end of the season to try to get to gold. Even if you people may not agree with what i'm saying, these are just my thoughts about the ranked placement matches. I'm sure there are some people who may be thinking the same as I am.

There are 6 days left before the ranked season ends. I could go and try to grind solo queue and try to get to gold. Then yet again I feel more prone to studying for my exams at the moment.

It's tied to your MMR. If you're a fresh player who has never Ranked before, you begin with something like mid-low Silver MMR and go from there. If not (like you), then you start at whatever MMR you got yourself. With the new season, everyone loses some MMR for a "soft reset"; it's something like 2 divisions worth. If your MMR was higher than the division you were in (S3) then you can get placed near or above S3. If your MMR was average or trash, then you'll end up getting a lower placement.

Basically, you actually got a pretty good deal. Your MMR would have to be really really good to get placed in Gold when you were S3 last season, and it's more likely that you would've just gotten to gold with sweet LP gains last season instead. You did get a good deal. Many people got demoted 2-3 divisions.
